How cutthroat is the competition at your school? Mine is quite boring - I'm likely the only college-obsessed uber-driven student present, and though four or five other people are at the top grade-wise, there's very little tension over class rank and such.

Ny high school is uber non competive-we don't have ranks and we don't even know our GPAs. I had to figure out my own and I think i screwed it up. I like it though but I would like to know how I stand aganist fellow students at my school
My middle School though was highly competive-one girl cut her arm because she had a 89.98 in a class and her teacher refused to round it up

theres this one kid who insists on having a competition (and an open one at that) with me to be valedictorian, and he pushes himself just so he could beat me and be #1. other than that, people are either laid back or else quietly competitive (and most fall into that latter category)

Yes i'm going to tell you a story
i go to a kinda small high school with about 500 people enrolled
me, paul, and this other girl are going to end up being valedictorian
then this girl who's super annoying, well she copied me
she found my schedule so now she's taking the same classes that she had no intention of taking before
and everyone is quite aware of this, and they're always saying to me "sarah you know she's taking so and so because you are and she's trying to copy you?" and i'm always like "YEAH .. it flippin p.isses me off but there's not much i can do about it"

so this girl who copies me may become valedictorian too but at this point i dont really really care as much. but her and this guy who have been rivals since they were like 3. and the guy .. well .. he's gonna be a lawyer. i mean i hope that tells you how much of a pushy kinda guy he is. he always has to get his damn way.
anyway he told me that "there is no f.ucking way she's going to beat me and i'm going to be salutarian".
and i dont really like the kid so i said "well sorry man, its a tough world out there"
and he said, "NO." and he got all of these people to start trying to convnice this one girl not to take so and so ap's so he can beat her. and he's trying to convince me to tell her since she's tryign to emulate me. he wants me to lie and say i won't take this and this AP even though i will so she won't so he can beat her.
i mean it's that competitive.

We're quiet competetives. We're competetive within ourselves but we're an amiable bunch

were fairly competitive. there are only 62 people in our senior class and most of the top 15 of us are friends, so its a friendly competition.

everyone at my school is extremely competitive but not openly. we're pretty small (50 girls per grade) so everyone knows what classes everyone else takes... we dont rank except for valedictorian & salutarian. everyone likes to pretend they dont care but they really do..a lot. we joke that a villa girl's worst nightmare is to not get into college

I think our school is pretty competitive for a public. Actually, apparently it's just our class this year. Last year I guess the valedictorian got 1 B in her high school career...this year we have I think 19 people with straight A's, equivalent to a 5.04 weighted GPA. Two people are tied at number 1, with a 5.10 GPA (how do you get that high anways?). I have a 4.79 GPA (3.86 unweighted) and I'm only ranked 25/787. Test scores are pretty crazy too. I got a 2190 SAT, which is only moderately above average for the collegebound group...one girl just got a 2370. A lot of people complain about how hardcore our class is this year compared to other years and wish they could have a different group of kids to compete against and not feel so pressured to do well. But I honestly don't care, I'm perfectly happy with my grades/test scores and really don't care how others are doing...but it's important to some I suppose.

My school had three valedictorians two years ago yet most of the students aren't very competitive.

We are COMPETITIVE! We round GPA on the 100 scale to 4 decimal places. It is really only competitive in the upper-range though. I think I have like a 95.4445, and I don't think I'm in the top 15 percent for my class; it isn't inflation...trust me! We only have 200 students. Oddly, I love everyone in our class.

we're laid back mostly.

and then there are those 10 or so kids that are uber competitive and get stressed about not studying for the physics friday 5 min quizzes..

and there's me and some others (about 30ish?).. the quiet-competitive, sneaky, cunning, smart, jolly students who make fun of the uber competitve people.

There's no competition here --

Most of the time you will see students busting out gamecubes / ps2 / xbox / guitars instead of studying (yes, during school)

My school is also extremely competitive, but still friendly.

For example, the student who most people think is going to be valedictorian has above 98% in all his current classes and 100% in five of them, while taking 4 APs.

Among the top 10 of us at my school we are extremely competetive. Most of us take the same classes, there is fighting to answer the questions so its pretty funny. But the school doesn't rank or anything so its not too bad, more like friendly competition.

At my school there's a little bit of a competition. There's like 30 people or so in my grade who are all like friends. They all get good grades and are somewhat obsessed with college. They are all in the same clubs and mainly same classes. Sometimes it annoying.

They are also probably going to be the presidents of the clubs and stuff too so I can't get any leadership positions. It really is annoying. AHHH

My school is pseudo-competitive, as I would like to put it. Everyone likes to take advantage of inflated grades, so it's competitive in a sense that they always want their A's even if they don't learn anything. School rankings are a private matter and I think people secretly care about it, but they don't show it. I think it's "pseudo-competitive" because my whole class takes advantage of the inflated grades, but then goes "SAT's REALLY don't measure intelligence." I agree with them that they don't measure intelligence, BUT when your saludatorian gets below 1600 on the new SAT's, there's no excuse for that. As far as I've seen, only 4 people have broken 2000 on SATs. Again, SATs are not a measure of how good of a student you are, but students of c/o 06 at school think they will be competitive in comparison to other students for admission spots into elite programs, which is sad. They think their 4.5's which are a product of extra credit and an easy AP curriculum will get them a long way, but it won't. When it really comes down to going against other students at other schools (such as AP's, SAT's, random tests), students at my school are well behind and they like to make excuses about it.

My school is only competitive for the top fifty people (we have a class of 650), but is very large. They all have different interests, and SAT-wise, most get over 2000, and at least three have over 2350. Other than that, not competitive.

well...our AP classes are really competitive. There are like, give people fighting for valedictorian. Well, were at least, I think one of them is on top - he stopped taking orchestra (he's been taking it since 4th grade, adores music) just so he could fit in another AP class to be #1. I'm kind of like "dude, come on, lighten up" but he's applying to Harvard so I can understand why he's pushing so hard. The other four are those four people you never ever see unless you're in an AP class with them because it's school and then home to study, then back to school.

Everyone else could really care less...some of us want to do well, but since our school doesn't rank, it's hard to tell where we all are. AP classes are, to the outside, chummy friends, but on the inside it's "hey, have this cookie (that I poisoned)." My english class makes you want to slit your wrists because everyone is on top of eachother. Baah!

My old school was intense. Not the dreaded "Asian prodigy" intense, but pretty intense. My new school is pretty weak in comparision, as only the top five care. Yay for me.

well i come from the school that had the Blair Hornstine/Ken Mirkin issue, but I guess that was extreme. There are some very smart kids but we all seem to get along and there isnt much tension, especially since we arent ranked and the school likes to not give us our GPA unless we ask.
