Also, what’s the average class size?
If you have any information, i would be glad to read it. Thanks!
@jonahtang - at the bottom of the page on this link, you’ll see the high rankings of the graduate department, which is a reflection of the undergraduate. But, also spend time on that page and its links and you will surely learn a lot about the program. Feel free to call the department if you have specific questions that are not answered - such as class size. They welcome your call.
Do you know where to find how many AP credits i can use if i attend UoM for Mechanical engineering?
I saw the page that says which ap credits they’ll accept and how many credits they’ll give you but is there a max number of credits you can get?
Also does anyone have a comment on the weather? I grew up in the Bay Area of California so pretty much temperature is never under 40. How bad will the winter be?
I haven’t seen anything that says there’s a limit to the number of AP credits you can use. Some may be empty credits, as there are required courses in the majors and in the general education, but they would show up just the same.
I believe Mark Twain said that the coldest winter he ever experienced was summer in San Francisco… a damp 40 can, in some ways, be more chilling than 20 below. YMMV, but something about the damp makes the cold sink down to the bones for me. When it gets really cold, you can add more layers to stay warm after all.
Just the same, if you’ve never gone skiing and haven’t felt temperatures below zero, it will be a shock. There are reasons far more people move from Minnesota to California than vice versa… and winter probably is the biggest. It can be long, and there are days when it can be brutal.
But that shouldn’t scare you off. For one, students find ways to have fun despite the weather. Campus has lots of areas to warm up- napping by a fireplace in the student union is very popular for example. Broomball or snowshoeing or ice fishing… all things you can brag about to your family in CA when you get back. And not every winter is harsh, nor is every day brutally cold.
Hi Jonah!
My son is also considering UMN,- Mechanical Eng. We visited campus last year in August, both of us like the surrounding area & Minneapolis It’s safe & CLEAN. We are Californian (Bay Area). During the visit, we had a chance to talk to the Director of Honors College (a Physics prof.) , the Director of Undergraduate Study- School of Engineering ( EE prof.), a lunch with an admission counselor, and a meeting with Mechanical Engineering dept. advisor. Everyone is so welcoming, my son put UMN as one of his top choices. The scholarships he received also helps to smooth his decision. Right now we are waiting for some other college admissions before making decision.
As a Californian & a Mom, I confess the one reason that makes me worry is the winter. The thought of my son walking across Miss. river bridge to classes in brutal winter, makes me sick. That’s why when he applied for housing I insisted putting Middlebrook (Honors Dorm) as last choice.
But… like Khidhala said, just add more layers to stay warm & be prepared. College is not only about academic, it’s also an experience. At UMN you get both.
You can PM me. Should my son decides to go to UMN, maybe you & him can hang out together?
Quick comment on what Kathsj says…
Busses shuttle across the bridge (and to the St.Paul campus) every 5-10 minutes during the school days. Walking across the bridge is an option, but not a requirement for any student. Also, most buildings are connected by tunnel or skyway to each other. It can be circuitous at places, but if you want to avoid the cold, you can take this option.
You will have to walk outside at some point, but generally not for more than 3-5 blocks, depending on your schedule and dorm.
