I'm a Junior with a 3.9 unweighted GPA. I have yet to take the SAT, but my practice test score is an 1840 (I have since started an SAT prep class) I scored a 4 on the World History AP exam, am currently enrolled in AP Language, AP US History, pre-ap physics, pre-ap Alg II, pre-ap French II, and a variety of art electives (I go to an art magnet) I plan on taking AP Physics, AP Psychology, AP Literature, AP French, and Calculus my senior year as well as taking Government, Economics, Precal, and French III at a community college this summer. I am currently in the top 20 percent out of a class of 229. I am an active/founding member of my school's environmental awareness club, NHS member, expect to be a NSHS member by senior year, and am the founder, contributor, and editor of my school's art magazine. How are my chances?

Are you in state or OOS? Since The College is a state school so your residency will come into play What’s your weighted GPA? you have a 3.9 and UW and you still aren’t in the top 10%? that’s insane.

Your schedule looks good-you’re taking all rigorous classes and that is exactly what you need to do so good job! Do you have any leadership positions besides your environmental club? as long as you are very involved in your clubs you should be fine.

I’m out of state. I am the editor-in-chief of the school art magazine, of which I am also a founder. I have been a large part of putting together cultural and artistic events for the Free Tibet Club, but have no official leadership position. I also am behind most of the student organization responsibility for the Creative Writing Club, but have no official position. My weighted GPA is 4.3.

Also, I was chosen as the Student of the Month (1 boy and girl for every grade is chosen by teacher nomination and then a teacher vote) 3 times and was chosen as the Freshman of the Year. I don’t think that’s very important in applications, but should I still mention it?

The College of William and Mary is a state supported school, not private. The state of Virginia puts strict limits on the number of out of state students. This automatically cuts your chances way down. Sorry, it’s a fact.

However, APPLY ANYWAY. Every student should apply to at least one “dream” college. Just make sure to have a good backup school.

I do not recommend going into the NSHS it is a known scam and colleges don’t like seeing on a resume stay with only NHS

Sorry, I meant to put SNHS (Science National Honor Society)

Either way if you choose to go into National Spanish Honor Society, it’s still good and fully accredited. I was in it and put it on the common app and i was accepted and am going to W&M.

I would put the student of the month honor on the app, there isn’t really a place for it but you can put it in the additional info section ad then elaborate on what it means.

While the College is required by Virginia law to have at least 65% in state students, they don’t. The top schools in VA (Tech, UVA, and W&M), all have about 60-63% in state students so it’s not like they have a cutoff like UNC where they only admit so many OOS students. I wouldn’t say it cuts your chances way down, but it does harm you. Being editor-in-chief and founding the magazine is a big deal and will surely help. Any club you’re really involved in will play a determining factor.

The College is tough. Many very bright people have been turned away, but it can be done. Try your hardest on the SAT but know the SAT isn’t the “most important thing,” for W&M-keep a very, very strong GPA and make sure you write good essays when you apply, (do the supplement, it’s fun). Also, if you can, interview at the school. It is really fun and it actually is used in the admissions process. You get asked a lot of typical questions and then a few not so typical and fun questions. I was asked if I could marry any fictional character from any time period, who would I marry? Finally, if W&M is truly your dream school, I recommend applying early; it increases your chance of admission.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Thank you! I will definitely apply ED, and I will most certainly interview.

Before you apply ED, make ABSOLUTELY 100% CERTAIN that you will be happy there. ED is a huge mistake for anybody who is not sure of what they are doing. I really mean it, 100% certainty is necessary. Colleges will try to block you from attending other schools if you stiff them on ED. Usually you cannot apply ED to more than one college.

Personally, I am an opponent of ED. It is way too restrictive and 90% of the benefit goes to the school, only about 10% to the student. Many elite schools are dropping it – for good reason. Princeton, for example, no longer offers ED.

Yet, like I said, APPLY ANYWAY. Everybody should apply to a dream school. But avoid ED unless you cannot help yourself.

Good Luck!

I applied ED. I was torn between UVA and W&M but I went with W&M and couldn’t be happier. But as mentioned above, ED is a big step so make sure you put a lot of thought into it.

Your GPA is really good so dont worry about not being in the top 10%. Try to get your test scores really high up considered you’re at a disadvantage for being out of state. Also focus on the newspaper thing, that’s really cool.

Your stats are good, but because it is a state school, it’s going to be a reach for you.
