Mine: most students only meet them like 4 times a year.
3 counselors for 2200 students

D’s school has great counselors. Rather than homeroom they meet in advisee groups. Usually that’s 8-10 kids per a faculty advisor. That’s their “homeroom” in the mornings. Once they become Jr.'s they’re assigned a new faculty advisor who’s also a college advisor. The kids have deadlines to get certain things done, given to them by the college guidance office, and overseen by their individual advisors. For instance, the summer between Jr & Sr year, the students had to write their general essay, create their common app account and something else I’m forgetting. The first day of school was “college boot camp” for all of the Seniors. They also have to have all applications and information in to the guidance office by Thanksgiving break for any January application deadlines. This allows the college office to make sure everything is there, teachers have rec’s completed, etc. It’s a really great process that’s taken so much weight off of our shoulders over the last couple of years.

Depends on the counselor. I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful counselor who really wanted to help me. Other counselors at my school dont really care and just want to get through there work day. some of my friends have those types of ppl and they have a harder time getting there college process started.

My counselors don’t really seek out meetings with students.
They’re alright, I haven’t really had any unpleasant experiences with them.
I’m gonna talk to mine sometime next week, so I’ll see how that goes.

We have around 5-10ish counselors and 2500 students. So far, as a junior, we only meet once with our counselor for our junior conference. My counselor was on the phone with her daughter when I was in her office, so yeah, she sucks.

We only have one guidance counselor. I go to a small boarding school where there are only 236 students total. Ninety-five of those are seniors. You’d think one counselor, if competent enough, would be able to handle ninety-five students. Wrong. So many things have gotten sent to the wrong place, at the wrong time. I’ve had no problems so far but I’ve had plenty of friends who can testify to it.

My counselor didn’t know how to complete the mid-year report for the common app… Overall the counselors at my school are more worried about trying to people to pass TAKS and graduate than any sort of college counselling.

3 college counselors and 2 regular counselors, as well as a school psychologist for ~500 students. The college counselors only work with the incoming seniors and the seniors, so they have to deal with around 200 students at any one time. The start working with the juniors (incoming seniors) in the spring semester, so the seniors are basically already set. I get to see my counselor on a daily basis, whenever I need to see them or just want to chat.
For the most part, my experience has been a very positive one. I am content with my college choices, and so far most things have gone very smoothly, but I know others in my class have not been so lucky.

Good luck everyone!

CalmlyiChaotic, does your daughter’s school happen to be located in NJ?? It sounds EXACTLY like mine haha

At mine there are maybe… 5 guidance counselors for about 750 students.

Mine is fantastic, I meet with him like every other week just to talk. I haven’t heard great things about the other GCs though.

spanky12 im in nj

HaHa, No Spanky12, we’re in Georgia. It’s a great process though, isn’t it?
