How good does it look on college apps to go abroad? And if so, where should you go? (developing?)

It looks good if you went through a program you had to be accepted into, not so great if you only went because your parents have money.

Anything that’s easy to get into if you have money isn’t going to look that great. I imagine it would look better than nothing, but it could also make you look over-privileged. Imho, it would probably look better to get a local part-time job.
I’m not a big fan of the idea of tourists messing around in developing countries just to make their college apps look better.

I’ve been wondering if it would actually look bad that I went abroad, but kinda sorta basically all it ended up being was partying on my parents money… But I feel like I should put it on my applications because technically it was a summer exchange program, and I don’t want to look like I did nothing all summer. It’s not like I had to apply to go or anything though. But still, I’m hoping it somehow makes me seem more well rounded or something. I guess I just hope it does t somehow hurt me in some way but I don’t think it would.

I just turned in an application to go abroad my senior year. It gives out scholarships to go. To me if you study abroad in a foreign country (other than like England) for a whole entire year it looks good for colleges. But if you do a summer program, while yes it can still look good, it just doesn’t show the commitment and type of maturity of that person. If you have to learn a new language that’s also another thing to consider. Sorry for the rambling but basically what I am saying is it can’t look bad being compared to sitting around watching tv all summer but there are better looking summer activities you can do instead that colleges will like. But also keep in mind if you study abroad for a semester or year that is something entirely different and in my opinion looks better for colleges. Also it depends on the program you go through.
