How good is Georgetown's reputation?

flight23 :)

No offense to FlaPops, but I could not agree with you more. Classical high school public education in Italy. Accepted at Duke. Crossing my fingers for financial aid.

As a Georgetown senior in the business school, I thought I would weigh in. The business school has a great reputation on Wall Street. All of the best firms recruit at Georgetown and we typically are one of their top 3 feeder schools. This might be why our rankings have taken a hit during the financial crisis.

As for consulting, like at other schools, there is less of an emphasis on the industry. While MBB do not explicitly recruit on-campus, they do hold small conversations with a select number of students. The other larger consulting firms recruit at Georgetown: Deloitte, Accenture strategy, PwC, IBM, etc. I also know a few kids at Booz Allen Hamilton. One thing to know is that due to our location in DC, many of the firms are recruiting for their public/government practices. It’s one of the fastest growing sectors in consulting and offers pretty good stability, hours and minimal travel.

That being said, post-graduation plans should not be the only factor in your decision. Financial aid is also important. The cultures at Berkley and Georgetown are very different. Have you visited?

I plan on visiting Berkeley in a few days but Georgetown is much too far for me, I can only rely on others’ opinions. I know Berkeley is very liberal and Georgetown is conservative, though there is a strong republican group in Berkeley and Georgetown is more moderate. I’m a liberal myself, so that’s one for Berkeley.

So far, these are the pro/cons of each university:

Berkeley
Pros:

  • Better overall reputation
  • San Francisco is a great location
  • I won’t stand out as an Asian
    Cons:
  • Public University - some gigantic introductory classes
  • UC system is facing financial problems
  • Admission into Haas isn’t guaranteed

Georgetown
Pros:

  • East Coast; It’s Washington D.C.
  • Closer to Wall Street
  • Immediate Admission into Business School
  • Opinions are better considering Social Life
  • Study Abroad program is far better and carries LSE, unlike Cal
    Cons:
  • Ranking is lower
  • Conservative
  • Not as many student organizations

There is a common misconception that Georgetown is “conservative”. It’s only about half conservative and half liberal while Berkeley is predominantly liberal. I wouldn’t consider Georgetown’s relative conservativeness a huge “con”. The College Dems, I believe, are one of their largest student groups!

Good luck with your decision!

To say Berkeley has a better overall reputation is pretty subjective… they do stand out as the TOP public university…

“Georgetown is more moderate” - I know Georgetown isn’t as conservative as Berkeley is liberal. I know they have a rabbi, imam, etc. Still, their overall stance is conservative. I mean, they ARE a jesuit university. They don’t even give funds to the Pro-Choice club specifically because the university’s stance is pro-life! And guess what? The Republican club in Berkeley is the largest student group as well! It’s because every other club is pretty much Democratic.

@sophomore12 - not really subjective, more like quantitative. Berkeley has a higher rank in every ranking system possible.

Okay if you want to look at it from a rankings perspective, I admit you’re right.

But as someone who has gone through recruiting/met people on Wall Street, I can tell you Georgetown places much better than Berkeley for NYC positions (which makes sense right given the location). Not sure how into finance you are. And I can tell you in terms of “reputation,” it is subjective. Would you say ND or BYU or a good number of schools in the Business Week rankings have a better reputation than Georgetown? Obviously those rankings are good to look at to give you an idea, but you have to do a sanity check and also look into their methodology. I know Georgetown gets dinged heavily in US News on our endowment and Businessweek for our facilities (which is funny because the business school just got a new building).

hey man, at the end of the day, I personally would love to see you come to Georgetown. I’m just trying to offer what I think is a fair opinion (as you stated you were looking for). It sounds like you’re leaning towards Berkeley, but just wanted you to get as much information as possible, given that you’re not visiting Georgetown.

I appreciate the response, it is very informative and explains quite a bit about Georgetown’s relatively low rankings. As someone who has considered becoming an I-Banker at one point, I can tell you that Finance is a very important subject for me. Indeed, I find that having Brigham Young as #1 under recruiter rank is simply preposterous so I do have a lot of misgivings about some of the methodology used. I am well aware that there are some flaws in the methodology (Berkeley is ranked comparatively low in the US News because of their class sizes).

It is truly a shame that I cannot visit Georgetown before I have to make a decision, so I can only rely on people like you to give me their opinion. In all honesty, I am actually leaning towards Georgetown right now primarily because of its location, I’m just waiting for my financial aid package to get sorted out because there were some major documents that I did not know I had to submit (i.e. IDOC packet).
