How good Is Texas Tech

I am an international student and I have been admitted to Texas Tech, Iowa state, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University at Buffalo SUNY, Oklahoma state University. I have elected my major as mechanical engineering and i got my preferred major in all of the schools. I have got a great scholarship from Tech( instate fee - $3000) , a $7000 from Iowas state and $10000 from oklahoma state. I would like to do a double major or a minor in a field related to energy. I would like to know how are the engineering programs in all of these schools( i am aware of the us news rankings). Also what are the opportunities in terms of undergraduate research and student teacher relation , campus atmosphere, social scene and student body.
p.s Visitng the campus is not an option for me.

What are your plans after graduation? Where are you going to work?

well i would like to do a masters degree in mechanical engineering but working for a year or two before getting into grad school is also an option.

well it depends on where i am going to work… all depends upon the job market while i am graduating

Texas Tech is a very local (Texas) college that provides good job opportunities in Texas (recruiters etc).
You need to contact them and ask if they have special rules and requirements for job and paid internship placement for international students.

what do you mean when you say Texas tech is a very local college?

I mean that it provides good employment opportunities and you can go to grad school if you are in the top of the class but this university doesn’t have international recognition if you are going to work outside USA, even outside Texas it is not very famous.

I think it means Texas Tech is pretty well known in Texas but not much outside Texas or internationally. It has national-wide refutation in some areas such as petroleum engineering, agriculture (especially, cotton), or wind energy but I’m not sure how it is prestigious in mechanical engineering.

I lived in Lubbock for some years back and by my observation people either like it or hate it. There is no in-between. It is in semi-desert area after all, which means no trees. There are trees in the city itself but there are no trees outside. All you pretty much see is endless cotton patches and some bushes. Lubbock is pretty big city (about 150,000?) and it has pretty much everything you need. I think it is the biggest city in West Texas (thus called Hub City)…

I agree w/Ya Ya. Best school on your list for engineering is Minnesota followed by Iowa State.

does iowa state have a better national recognition than texas tech? and if yes then on what basis?

It is my opinion ( I have engineering degrees from UT Austin and Georgia Tech - albeit from 25 years ago) that Iowa State is a stronger school in engineering and also has a better national rep. Partly because Iowa is more centrally located and closer to population centers. Texas Tech is perceived (by those not in west Texas) as a “backwater”. However, your education is what you make of it. If you work hard at TTU, you can be as successful as someone who goes to a more highly regarded program.

Also, USNWR ranks Iowa State higher than Tech.
