How hard is AP chemistry?

I'm taking AP chem next year as a junior. How hard should I expect it to be? Any tips or advice? I heard the national average on the exam is 2!?!?
Has anyone here ever gotten a perfect 5?

I’m taking AP Chemistry and it’s pretty rough. I did well in chemistry honors but this class is a big culture shock lol. You have to spend 5+ hours on homework and studying a week to do well in the class. The exam isn’t a cake walk either, it’s brutal. The first half of AP Chemistry isn’t that bad, but the second part is when it gets pretty tough, it’s a year-long class for a reason. Try to study every night and don’t get too far behind because you will get lost. Other than that, I highly encourage you to take it because it’s so much fun and the labs are pretty sweet.

I’m currently taking AP Chem
It isn’t that hard for me (definitely not my hardest class!). Definitely easier than the science class I took last year (I took regular unweighted biology)

Might depend on who is teaching it though.

@fantasy
5+ hours on homework?
My teacher barely gives us any homework other than lab analyses (well he does give us assignments but they’re ‘optional’ as he doesn’t collect them or check them)

Hmmm, it depends on how well you understand the basics of chemistry. If you understand the basics, AP Chem really just fits in the cracks and crevices of what you already know. It’s challenging at times and is not impossible to succeed in.

Just read Fantasy’s post…Err…For me it’s a complete different story. I get about an hour at most of homework a night. The material isn’t hard. It makes sense really.

@Masterball We get 2-3 parts of problem sets for each chapter. They’re graded on complete accuracy and she only checks certain problems. My homework percentage is about 70%. Also in the course syllabus my teacher gave us said to devote 5+ hours to homework and study each week. She wasn’t lying lol.

Okay thanks so much Guys for ur feedback. I’m motivated to take the class and willing to accept the challenge ahead of me! All APs are hard but I guess if u put in all the effort you can and try your best then u can be happy with the results.
Thanks once again!

It take everything you know about easy Chemistry and take the difficulty to over 9000!
This class will seem so easy at first but then it 180 on you and leave you suffering from the benefit of doubt. Heed my warning you will need to study for this class more than any other class.

@fantasy wow… your ap chem class is WAY harder than mine…

The way the grading system works for my class is 70% of the grade is tests (haven’t gotten under an A- on a test yet) and 30% is labs (the only graded homework assignments, usually not hard or long, I get As on most of them)

Yes, succesfully encouraged a person into AP Chemistry.

I don’t mean to turn the subject…but…What chapter or topic are you guys on?

I took AP chemistry last year and if the national average really is 2 then I say i’m above average. I got a 3 on the exam. In my class last year only a couple of people got 5s. AP chem is tough if you do not spend time studying. Even I thought AP calc BC was easier.

My class actually isn’t that bad. I’m getting a B really easily and got an A because of some stuff that shouldn’t have happened

@Niquii77 Right now we’re on chapter 13: properties of solutions.

Ah, we’re finishing up acids and bases. I like properties of solutions. My teacher squeezed that topic in before exams.

@ Niquii77

We will be finishing Acid/Base/Buffers soon and it’ll be our last “new” unit. The rest of our year will be revisiting first year chem stuff we learned and going more in depth.

Hey, we’re at the same spot then!

In my class we’re at Equilibrium. To say that we’re behind is an understatement, although we have finished all the “difficult concepts”.
Is AP Chem anyone else’s first year of chem? We are in a block schedule and it’s a full year class, so we are getting a double course. Still I wish we had an honors foundation.

it’s not very hard. i get chemistry though. alot of people are failing my class, but they wouldn’t be if they put in a little effort.

We just finished IMF and are now learning gases. We still need to do Acid/Bases, Solutions and Equilibrium (but we’ve already partly studied this) and Electrochemistry. Oh and Chemical Kinetics

@Niquii
We just finished the chapter on Gases/Gas laws
(PV = nRT :slight_smile: )

In my school, AP Chem is supposed to be 2nd year chemistry. But sophomores are required to take Biology so I can’t take it as a junior without taking a normal chemistry class. Do you think it’d be too hard to take that class directly?
