How hard is it for asians to fit in?

I have a friend who is currently a freshmen and she told me that it’s really hard for asians to fit in at BC. Is that true?

Who is she trying to fit in with?

If anything, the asian community here is really strong, albeit a bit cliquey.

Asians are well represented at BC. Most people get along fine with each other. I'm Asian and I haven't lived with a single Asian through out my four years of dorming and I have enjoyed my time tremendously.

Koreans are incredibly cliquey though. I have never seen a Korean student by his or herself without another Korean student around. (And I have looked).

"I have a friend who is currently a freshmen and she told me that it's really hard for asians to fit in at BC."

Really? That might be true if you are really shy and don't go out much. If you are a proactive or just a have a moderate social skill, you will have friends of all races. Making friends isn't like winning a Rhodes scholarship, there is no essays, no interviews, no recommendations. Just show up to events and classes, and don't be a jerk. That's how I've made friends. I don't think my method is a big secret.

what reddune said is very true. its not any harder for asians to find friends than it is for anyone else. and if your korean you can automatically have all the korean friends you want. (but i DO have a friend who is korean and not part of the korean clique and friends with all of us white kids).

just tell her to hang out with the girls in her hall. and if they dont hit it off, join some clubs or an asian club.

To extend on this thread--how cliquey is the school in general when it comes to race?

From my visit to BC, I have to be completely honest--I saw maybe one or two non-Caucasian people (and it was clearly a busy day so I saw a lot of students) and there didn't seem to be a lot of diversity. Any thoughts from current BC students?

its definetly not the most diverse school in the country. most of the kids you see walking around will be white and wearing northfaces/uggs. that being said.. it is MUCH more diverse than my hometown and HS so i really cant be a judge.

and as far as cliques go.. yes you will see groups of asians of groups of african americans but its not like its exclusive. i think its more like you can choose the cliques if thats who you gravitate towards and thats who you want to be frends with and its not uncommon for people to have friends of all different races.

Okay, thanks beanieboo!

Though I can't say for certain, because I'm not asian, there are a LOT of asian kids at BC and they seem to really flock together. It's rare that you see an asian student hanging out with non asians.

If you're looking for diversity, check BC off your list RIGHT NOW. It's just not a diverse place, and if you aren't from a catholic prep-type school, make sure you visit BC a lot and really, really think about your decision. It really caters to the preppy student and if you aren't okay with that you might be pretty miserable.
