How hard is it to get high grades in UCSD?

Topic says it all. For a premed curriculum, how hard is it to get a GPA of around 3.8 or higher? Is is next to impossible? About what percentage of the undergrads get grades like this?

it's not impossible you know, they DO reserve those top slots for the ___ cum laudes at graduation. getting good grades is a mix of balancing a social life, studying time, a major that excites and challenges you without making you cry, motivation, and to some extent, your intelligence. (it's true.)

different people have different goals; for many kids at UCSD, getting a 4.0 is not one of them.

approx 14% are awarded latin honors at graduation. i think those honors start around 3.6. i think only 2% receive 3.9+

getting a good grade in one class isn't hard but getting good grades in all classes is a lot harder.

Some bitter students will tell you it's impossible, but as others have noted, it certainly is possible to get straight As. Some premed students actually do get 4.0s.

i_lose was almost correct...The top 12% receive latin honors (cum laude, etc.) and for the class that just graduated the cutoff was 3.633 (I should know...I had a 3.631 :( )

As others stated, it's not that hard. If you have a lot of motivation to do well, go to class, and don't slack off, you will probably get good grades.

you really got to commit. there was only one guy in my suite last year that got above a 3.9.....and he never came out of his room. when he wasn't in class he was studying, literally.

Only 15% of the student population has a 3.8 gpa and up.......

I remember looking at the chart of the gpa and its breakdown in percentages...

Realistically, though, high grades don't mean **** if you aren't well-rounded (ie. no extracurriculars, work experience, sociability, connections, etc.)

Getting a high GPA is great and all, but don't make it your only priority. Anything above a 3.5 is respectable.

At orientation they mentioned that nobody in the history of UCSD has gotten a perfect 4.0. Apparently there was one kid with a 3.9 who committed suicide.

Although now that I'm browsing this thread, I've got my doubts...

I'm positive there have been students with 4.0s.

z7xfla you were lied to.

Blatantly.

A guy in my fraternity graduated class of 06 with a 4.0 -- in Biochem Bio

Like the others said: you were lied to.

Hopefully they were just trying to scare us. Worst case scenario is that they meant to say nobody in Revelle has gotten a 4.0, but that's probably not true either...
