How hard is it to get into UCLA Medical School if graduated from UCLA

Title says it all. The only reason I am asking this is because I'm seeing a couple older threads saying chances are slightly slimmer for UCLA undergrads...I would really like to know what you think or know. And my question leans towards> UCI to UCLA Medical School? I'm not asking if its possible(cuz everythings possible) :)

UCLA medical school does not give any preference to UCLA graduates.

https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/PreMed.pdf</a></p>

UCLA premed acceptance rate to medical schools is around 50-55%.

http://career.ucla.edu/Students/GradProfSchCounseling/MedicalSchoolStatisticsForUCLAGraduates.aspx</a></p>

The data I saw indicated a slight boost for UCLA applicants, but it was very slight. Most elites medical schools (with the exception of Michigan) select very few of their own undergraduates.

One anecdote evidence, a UCLA grad wit 3.95 Gpa was not accepted. He had decent MCAT because he got into Ucsd and Dartmouth.
I know lots of Uci grads got into ucla dental school but not anyone that was accepted to UCLA medical school. Most likely uci grads didn’t have high MCAT scores.

If I were to attend pretty much any UC school would it be easier for me to get into UC med schools. (I am from SoCal that’s why I’m interested in UC’s) I’ve also read other threads how a GPA from UCI and UCB mean different to med schools. Is this true? 3.9 GPA from UCI and 3.6 from UCB. There’s this thing that UCB and UCLA has that’s called grade deflation…so for this would UCI’s GPA and UCB’s GPA look the same at UC med schools (or other schools?) One more thing, the closest UC to me is UCSD.

Also does this mean the UCLA med admission see UCLA UG the same as any other applicant?

Posting on my cell phone, not great. But is think the reason 3.6 from UCB beats 3.9 from uci is probably the MCAT scores. However if you have 3.9 and to MCAT scores you will be able to go to top medical schools.
Regarding ucla treating ucla undergraduate from one anecdote evidence it was not good. Such student complained to his professors/advisors at ucla and was told ucla probably wants different students who had gone somewhere. No proof that this is true to everybody but that was one comment from his advisor.

Please dont get me wrong for saying this… but that means it is possible for a UCI student to gain admission to UCSF med school

Probably not but you should actual check UCSF to see if there are actually any UCI students there.
But from many friends that I have at work whose kids got into medical schools both in-state and out-of state medical schools, the probability from UCI to Harvard or UCSF medical schools are low. Usually those medical schools take students with top grades from Harvard, for example, Mark Zuckerberg’s wife went to Harvard and got into UCSF medical school. Meg Whitman’s husband I think went to either Princeton or Harvard for undergraduate and to UCSF medical school.
Those are 2 well known examples that I can think off.
It depends on the program of interest too. But my coworker’s kid got near perfect GPA at UCB(3.95 and above) got into USC medical school. Perhaps USC has certain program his kid wants to go into.
So even with good grades and good MCAT scores the top selective colleges get into top selective Medical schools.

Thanks a lot!! This information is really helpful @DrGoogle

Also what do you think about UCSD to UCLA med and UCSD to UCSF med

My neighbor went to UCSD and got into UCLA medical school so I guess it’s doable. UCSD to UCSF is doable but also not as prevalent as other tippy top private schools. UCLA is a very good medical school, UCSF is even better medical school than UCLA. UCSD is as good as UCLA, I think one is 15 and the other is 14(IIRC), but check US news rankings to get an idea. The difference between these 2 schools is the location. UCSD is next to a rich area, rich people do not let young intern or student practice on them as my neighbor told me, but UCLA and UCSF might be in worst neighborhood. Even UCLA is in a nice area, but UCLA is in charge one of Torrance hospital as a head injury, the ambulance always take you there regardless whether you have insurance or not. So the local area like Compton, Hawthorn, etc… get a lot of these injuries and the UCLA students/interns get more of these cases to practice. I would think it’s the same as UCSF.

I know some people underestimate UCD…but according to US News UCD stands by UCSD. However I am not too sure about their pre-med. Do you think chances are same with UCD if placed in UCSD’s position? (I am really striving for these schools as they will give me in-state tuition)

UCSF class of 2017 consists of 80% California residents. But this could be a misleading number because many california residents go out of California for premed.

http://meded.ucsf.edu/admissions/successful-applicant-profile-class-2017</a></p>

UCSF also probably has 4% admit rate assuming 300 got in unless it is much higher within California and most of the OOS were turned away.

7,308 AMCAS applications received
500 applicants interviewed
149 students enrolled

UCD is known for premed. So it’s good but I don’t know what percentage of its graduate get into to UCSF.

This link is outdated but it shows 24% of UCB graduated got accepted to UCSF a few years back, not recent data.
https://career.berkeley.edu/MedStats/top20.stm</a>
4% for UCLA to UCSF
http://career.ucla.edu/Students/gradprofschcounseling/MedicalSchoolStatisticsForUCLAGraduates/year-2013-uc-other-california-medical-schools-acceptance-matriculation</a>
This link shows 1 out of 356 UCSD got accepted to UCSF
http://career.ucsd.edu/undergraduates/consider-grad-school/pre-medical-data.html</a></p>

So I think other California schools could be Stanford, Caltech, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, etc. Because it didn’t look like the UCs got a lot in to UCSF.

I see what you’re saying. I guess UCSF is sort of out of reach for me…(though this doesn’t mean I will never consider) I didn’t know that UCD had a good pre med though! What do you think about UCD> UCSD or UCD> UCLA? Do you think students from UCD do well on MCAT unlike UCI? BTW @DrGoogle you have a big help to me, thank you!!!

Sadie, it doesn’t matter, they are all good for premed. I think UCSD and UCLA are more competitive, harder to get good GPA. I think UCI and UCD are similar and it depends on the what kind of students you are. My niece was had great GPA(>3.85) but she was not a good test taker, even for SAT. She didn’t do well enough on MCAT to get into any UC medical schools so she had to go OOS. If you do well on MCAT then you have a good chance. It’s not easy to get into UCI medical school either. But my niece is ambitious, she wants to be a surgeon so in the end things might work out better for her, who knows.
I want to share one anecdote with you regarding UCD, my coworker at work has a nephew graduated from UCD undergraduate, then to a medical school(I think UCD medical school, not 100% positive). He is now making 1/2 million dollar year, owning his own business. I know money isn’t everything to everybody but just in case you want to know how successful UCD graduate can be. Same with my brother’s BIL, he went to UCI and now also making in the million dollar a year category, also owing his own business. So focus on the end goal and not how you get there is my advice.
