So I just got into UCSB as an undeclared major in the College of Letters and Science and I would like to transfer to either engineering or CCS so I can major in Computer Science. How difficult would it be? What classes should I take in order to be able to transfer? Is it even possible?

I really want to go to UCSB, but idk if I'd go if I can't even major in what I want to major in. Any input will be great, thanks!

As far as I know, CCS CS will only accept you if the College of Engineering accepts you for CS. They use the College of Engineering’s decision as an initial “weeder.”

That being said, if you’re determined to get into the College of Engineering, do whatever you can to do it! Talk to the CS advisor ASAP so you can get advising help, as you’ll need to stay on-time with the suggested course schedule for CS majors (this is a must. If you’re behind in the classes they will not consider you). Also, do well in your classes. Your grades in the CS classes will tell the department how prepared you are for the major.

@Kikijon Well when we attended the Chancellor’s Reception, we were advised to contact them asap if a transfer between colleges was desired. They indicated that it could be difficult but not impossible. However, it becomes even more difficult as time goes on. No indication whatsoever that admission would be rescinded. So, I’m certain you are safe there.

It is possible, but unlikely, they will allow you to change majors into engineering before even starting at UCSB. If they don’t change it before you enroll then the page at http://engineering.ucsb.edu/prospective_undergraduates/changing_your_major details what you need to take in order to apply. It would be smart at orientation to stop by and talk to them to get a sense of how hard it would be and any other advice they can give you. In particular you should ask them how many people tried to change, how many were accepted, and the GPA cutoff for acceptance.

The change of major request won’t work, it’s not as easy as that. You have to take the CS required courses (CS 8, 16, 24, 32, 40) and have a solid GPA to get into each (Around 3.8 or higher) cause there’s a waitlist to get into each if you’re not in the College of Engineering. You need to be top notch to be able to transfer in, otherwise you’re out of luck.

Well I just talked to the CS Advisor last week at the Spring Insight and he said that as long as I get a B in all my CS prerequisites and a C in all of my math prerequisites that I should be good. He said that everyone that met those requirements last quarter was successfully able to transfer to the CompSci major.
