Umich barely reads essays? Au contraire. They revised their whole process to make reading the essays a part of the evaluation process. They're not going to ignore them.

ncsu1987, it will help your daughter that she is a female applying to engineering. As others have said, aid to out-of-staters is not generous. U-M does not meet full need of nonresidents.

QUESTION!

If I was born in Michigan, lived there til I was 8, but moved to South Carolina, is there any way I can possibly get in-state status if I stay with a relative while I go to UM?

I don't believe in sweating the essays, but I would never assume the essays are barely read. You never know when an adcom might just decide to read one carefully--it could be yours.

Hoedown, I agree that the essays are read, but they do not play a huge role. If an essay, which is quite forward and easy, is well thought out and well written, the applicant will be ok.

ThomYorke - what were the stats of your friend that got in (roughly)?
Thanks :)

beyourself, ThomYorke’s friend GRADUATED last winter! LOL! He has since gotten married and had children! This thread is 5 years old!!!

ncsu1987: Your d’s stats are good for OOS…read all about Michigan’s admissions requirements and you will see that they put a lot of emphasis on the rigor of your d’s schedule…(lots of AP’s), committment to the EC’s over many years and leadership positions. For example if you d is in band have her go out for leadership team or section leader or drum major…chem club…have her go out for President, NHS etc…you get the point. Also make sure your diversity essay is a good one…my son oos got some $$ based on his stats and his diversity essay we were non-need according to them. Also have some good experience to write about for the engineering essay as well…some good hands on recent things she has participated in. Michigan looks for the total package when evaluation OOS students. Good Luck!! Michigan is a great place…just wait until you visit Ann Arbor…Michigan loves the $$$ they get from OOS…they accept a higher % of OOS than many other public universities. Best Advice: APPLY EARLY…my son applied mid-October and was accepted on Nov. 5th…it was such a weight off for senior year since it was his #1.

Solid call back on 5 yr old thread!
