How hard is MIT? Social opportuniteis? Fun?

I've grown to love theU.com. They have videos about different colleges, and after watching the social video about MIT, I was kind of turned off about the school. Previously I was only interested in MIT as a possibility for me continuing baseball and playing in college, but I just had a ridiculously lucky week of standardized testing and might consider applying. I have 34 ACT (36 math, 35 science), 800 Math IIC, and 690 Physics. I love math and found physics very interesting this year and I plan to major in some form of engineering. So obviously why not try for MIT if I want to do engineering? My only concern is that I may not have the college experience that I want. I really want a big school atmosphere, and I realize that would not be possible at MIT. Boston is a nice perk, but how is the actual MIT campus social scene in terms of partying or greek life? I know I have asked this before, but I want to hear some more opinions. Schools I'm considering applying to include Virginia, Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Northwestern, UT, Clemson, Penn, Georgia, and Purdue. How would you compare the ability of the students to be social? Or would MIT be a weekend only type school?

and please pardon the eccentricity of this post...i just read through it. oops

What turned you off about the social life video specifically?

On average, I think MIT students don't have as much time to be social as students at big state schools. Individually, though, if partying is a priority for you, you will be able to find a way to make it work. There are definitely people who aren't weekend-only partiers, particularly within the fraternities.

Obviously, it's difficult to have a "big-school atmosphere" in a school with only 4000 undergrads. But if you want to have a more standard college social life, you can do that at MIT. If you don't, you don't have to. Everybody just lives and lets live.

I'm not sure really...I guess I just didn't get the same feel from it that I got from other videos. However, I was comparing it to much bigger schools which is probably a big reason why it didn't live up to the expectation I had set for it.
