my friend from webb high (valedic) didnt even apply to UCI, but they still offered him full scholarship. A few friends from my school got full scholarship and they weren't even top 10. Is getting full scholarship easy?

How did UCI offer him a full scholarship (I assume you mean Regents) if he didn't even apply? Regents scholarship covers 9,000 per year or more depending on financial need. UCI does not just give out full scholarships covering everything to anyone based on merit (i.e. you're not going to see people offered $20,000 a year, which would cover EVERYTHING for an instate student, just because they are super smart, at least I have never met anyone or heard of such a thing at UCI). I have never heard of UCI offering a full scholarship to someone who hasn't even applied. Although I do know many people who have Regents/Chancellors scholarships and were at the very top of their high schools, but of course they applied. In my 51 person honors dorm (Campusewide Honors Program--CHP) freshmen year there were 5 valedictorians, but just that I knew of.

UCI also has the Chancellor's scholarship which covers 7,000 a year (and of course a student is eligible for more financial aid too depending on need).

In terms of offerring these scholarships, it depends heavily on stats and competitiveness of high schools I'm sure it taken into account as well. When UCI makes admission/scholarship decisions they don't know what rank a student has, only if they are in the top 4% and are thus ELC eligible.

i dont think it's that hard eheh. i have like a mediocre stat and i was offered $22,00 and a work study of $1500. this excludes my cal grant, but i chose davis for a lousy aid award.

Clucky--If you were offered 2,200 and 1,500 work study, that's for financial aid, not for merit based scholarships. So it's different. Unless they offered you either a Chancellors or Regents scholarship and reduced it to accomodate your other aid. But if you did it should still be more than 2,200 and they would have sent you a nice card with the UC seal on it and all that.

I agree with Yack - its VERY difficult to get a merit scholarship from the UC system with all of the budget cuts lately. You really do have to be at the top of your academics in order to qualify and there is no real way of applying for it - youre chosen.

For example: When I put my transfer apps in I got a $10,000 merit scholarship from Boston U. and a $7,500 merit scholarship from NYU however, I got NOTHING from UCSD, UCLA, or UC Berkeley.

While that may all be for transfers, my point is simple. Money does not move easily in the UC System and if you cant get it unless you are an applicant in the UC system and you are like top 3%. In fact, most of my friends that got the Chancellors scholarship needed fin aid badly.

I don't think they award Chancellors or Regents scholarships based on financial need, but they will add more on top of that if needed. For instance with the Regents I think they say that they will fulfill your entire financial "need" on top of the 9,000 which everyone gets. Now.."need" means something different to the financial aid people than it does to people who actually have to pay it. It does not mean a "full" (i.e. 20,000 a year) scholarship.

These awards-you mention require an application to the UCs is required. When do you find out if you qualify-is the hs gc supposed to fill out a form on your behalf? Do I have to do something to be recognized-more than my transcript/class rank-?

Nope, just fill out the application like you normally would and if you're good enough you'll get Regents/Chancellors scholarship and CHP (campuswide honors program). Or some people just get CHP with no merit scholarship.

UCI doesn't give out scholarships to people who don't apply to UCI. Your friend is full of it.

Actually, i think they do. My genius friend got a scholarship (Donno if full or not) to UCI, and he didnt even apply. hes one of thoes guys who have straight A's, take alot of AP's, get 5's, seems to know all the calculus answers, varsity sports etc. so i think its possible.

I remember my friend getting accepted to UCI without applying. It might have been the ELC thing. I'm not sure this is relevant =X.

I think throught he ELC thing is guaranteed admission, but you still have to apply

You still have to apply for ELC to work and it doesn't have anything to do with scholarships.

Under the ELC you are guaranteed admission into a UC. The UC of your choice is not guaranteed. UCI took the ELC's this year, so it most definatly is possible to gain admission to a UC you did not apply to under the ELC.

You still have to apply. ELC just says if you apply we will let you in. If you don't fill out the app and pay the $50 or whatever it is these days to send it to the particular UC campus they aren't going to let you in.

thats what i was trying to say, same with scholarships, if you didn't apply to UCI they wont have your information like test scores HS transcript, general info, then theres no use in getting a scholarship bc it wont be available to u
