I’m planning to major in a hard science and was wondering how many students get 3.8 GPAs and how hard it will be to obtain this mark. One of my friends is a neuro major with a 3.87 GPA and he said that he’s already seen a lot of opportunities offered to him. Is it safe to assume that a 3.8 is a good goal to set?
How hard it is depends on the type of student you are. It will take a lot of work but it is doable. Take a look at the Dean’s List for each semester and you will see a lot of names on there. My guess is those students worked very hard to accomplish that.
Okay thanks for the response! Do what percent of students can pull a 3.8 off?
This is a really old statistic but someone once posted that the top 15% cutoff was 3.75. There is a lot of variables though because that is across all majors and everyone has a different skill set.
Ok thanks! So 3.8 is probably about the top 10%.
Speaking as a math and history duel major (and a com sci minor) with a 3.9, if you want a high GPA at W&M, be prepared to sacrifice a lot.
I’d recommend planning out your days almost to the hour and allotting set time periods for off-time. Avoiding drinking would probably be beneficial as well.
If you graduate with a 3.8+ in a hard science here, it’s safe to say you didn’t live the “college experience” most did.
Hard fact, but true.
So yes, it is possible. Just don’t have any illusions about what you need to do to achieve your goal.
