Since CC is full of over achievers I would like to ask you guys how your social life has been affected by your drive to succeed:

Please answer the following questions:

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?:

(if "yes" to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?

How has being a top student affected your dating life?

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:

Yes, i guess 32 act.
Even better. My friends are smart but funny so they fit in the same mold as being top students
Not much. Still have had dates.
Improved them.
Yes.

1) top 50 but that is all I know
2) I meet more people and make more friends by getting involved.
3) Not at all. I don’t date, I flirt. I’ll date when I feel like it. It is unnecessary at the moment.
4) parents: they expect much of me. teachers: umm…not sure…
5) I don’t know anyone who freaks out as much as I do when I do poorly.

1. Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?: No. My grades were pretty bad in 9th/10th grade. And I still don’t get straight A’s or anything… 2. (if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?: I don’t have any friends 3. How has being a top student affected your dating life?: Never dated anyone 4. How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?: My relationship with my mom is alright, I think it would be the same regardless of my grades (My brother is a “top student” and I don’t think it changes anything about his relationship with our mom) As for teachers I don’t exactly participate in class, but there’s always next year…
**5. Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?: ** I don’t know…

1) Yes, my GPA, SAT, class rank, college admissions, and academic competition achievements establish me as a top student.
2) Most of my friends are also top 50 kids (out of a class of 800). It’s not a snobby thing, they’re just who I encounter. I value them more for qualities other than their intelligence/achievement, for the most part. Three of my closest friends and I form the Team of Four (top 4 in class rank, SATs, and extracurricular achievements). We compete with the outside world as much as with each other, and run as many things we can on the buddy system. We’re like an academic cartel. I’ve drifted away from the friends I had coming into high school who aren’t on the AP-heavy track, in part because I rarely see them.
3) My personality and values have a far greater bearing on my dating life than my academics (the general unwillingness to admit failure and insistence on pursuing remote possibilities). However, I would say that academics have sharply driven the opportunity cost of being in a relationship, so I passed up some opportunities that I might otherwise have pursued. But it’s really impossible to separate my personality from the busy academic life associated with it.
4) Teachers tend to be divided into two camps. Virtually every teacher I come across at this point is interested in me in one capacity or another. Within about the first week, they divide into two camps: those who see me as a fun opportunity and those who see me as a pain in the butt. Some teachers I take to, and they advocate strongly on my behalf by looking out for my interests with respect to competitions, scholarships, and the like. The remainder hate my guts and see me as arrogant, rambunctious, chauvinistic, and offensive. Most of the latter eventually come to respect me all the same. Very few teachers (or people in general, for that matter) have a neutral opinion of me. My parents generally support me, and give me the discretion in how to use my time.
5) Maybe a small group that I happen to be friends with, but not in general.

Yes. 3.8 GPA, Top 5% and 35 ACT

It hasn’t; no one thinks I’m that smart

See #2

These relationships have always been good

No.

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?: Yes, 4.0 UW GPA and such.

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?: People either think I’m snobby or a know-it-all, which puts a strain on things. But I’m likable enough.

How has being a top student affected your dating life?: I’m an Asian girl with totalitarian parents - my dating life is nonexistent.

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?: I hate my psychopathic father who doesn’t speak to me except to reprimand me for my faults and am okay with my teachers, who usually like me but nag about my quietness.

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?: Not at all, my guidance counselor was ridiculously giddy when she found out I was thinking about college ever since I scored well on the SATs in 7th grade.

Anyway, though, I guess I’ll just succumb to this narcissistic self-examination too.

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?:

In my school, yes, but compared to mifuners, nooo. Toughest courseload possible w/ 4.0 UW, SAT/PSAT, etc. Nothing special, but it’ll do.

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?

I wouldn’t say it has. My friends inevitably morph into “overachievers” as well, and if not, we just sort of drift apart due to lack of contact.

How has being a top student affected your dating life?

There’s no…actual competent/good-looking/intelligent/nontaken guys here lol. I wouldn’t know.

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:

Teachers love me, I suppose, just because I actually seem to care about class and homework, etc. My parents are okay. My mom supports my decisions, etc, but is easily offended. My dad acts really generic when we talk…it’s like he’s wary of me lol.

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:

People at my high school are either what you’d call losers, or have had older siblings go to college. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who’s the oldest kid, and with parents who never saw the American application process/requirements.

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?: Yes

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships? I make friends with the other smart people.

How has being a top student affected your dating life? I don’t

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?: not much

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?: Some

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?
Sure. Rank, SAT scores, admissions success.

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?
Most of my friendships are with other top students.

How has being a top student affected your dating life?
I don’t think I would have had romantic relationships whether or not I was a top student.

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:
I have good relationships with my teachers. If I weren’t intelligent and diligent, I think I would be a disappointment to my parents.

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:
Most people don’t care as much as I do.

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?:

Yes. My counselor informed me a couple of weeks ago that I’m in the top 5% of my graduating class.

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships?

Being a top student does not affect my friendships at all. However, I’ve made new friends who are extremely supportive and funny =)

How has being a top student affected your dating life?

I don’t date. My parents waggled their fingers of disapproval on this topic since I was in seventh grade. D:

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:

I love all of my teachers. However, I don’t think being a top student really affects my relationship with them. From what I’ve observed, they’ve been supportive to all of their students.

My parents and I become closer, especially after the college application season. I’ve learned that what they wanted for me is different from what I think they wanted for me.

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:

A few people do. It’s difficult to answer this because my view of college admission stuff changed. I’ve seen some interesting results from the students at my school so far, and I’ve realize that my view is skewered. Now if only I knew this before I apply…xD

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?:
Yes. Top ten so far and 2000+ SAT

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships? Not much…most of my friends are in the top ten :b

How has being a top student affected your dating life?
Not much still…

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:
They expect too much of me now

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:
Not really…they think I’m obsessed even though I’m really not

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?: Probably, though my grades aren’t so hot due to difficult family/personal circumstances and attending 3 different high schools in 4 years. 2290 SAT (non-superscored), NMSF, 5 on only AP exam I’ve taken so far, unique EC’s in spite of difficult situation. No class rank though; neither of my high schools so far have reported or even given any hint of rank (i.e. no such thing as even top 10%, 25%, etc.)

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships? It’s not so much being about a “top student” than it is about moving so much in my case. Though I’ve noticed that the people I tend to stick to are also pretty high achievers themselves.

How has being a top student affected your dating life? Not possible, again partly due to moving so much.

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?: My sister hates being compared to me. My teachers have generally viewed me in a positive light. Not sure what to put for this one.

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?: Hm, probably not, at least not in terms of what they think colleges are looking for.

Do you consider yourself to be a top student and why?:
Straight A’s since 7th grade. Always been ranked number 1 in class (junior now). 32 ACT. Have a perfect GPA right now.

(if “yes” to 1): How has being a top student affected your friendships Doesn’t really affect anything.

How has being a top student affected your dating life?
I’ve always been the college/career/future focused kid since 8th grade. Not much time to date

How has being a top student affected your relationships with parents/teachers?:
Most of my teachers favor me. Sometimes i feel it gives me an unfair advantage sometimes but if it gets me that A I’m fine. Gets me into college

Do many people at your HS share your view of college admissions stuff (grades, test scores)?:
I doubt anybody stresses grades, scores, college, etc. like me. Most of my friends have a great mindset about thinking about college but I’m obsessive.
