How helpful is philosophy and international affairs as majors for law school?

Hi,

I am a high school senior who is currently deciding an ideal undergrad major for law school. Since I’m not great at mathematics, majority of my peers have recommended philosophy since it entails a great deal of reading, writing, and forming of logical arguments which are crucial for law school. Since I’d like to get into Constitutional, Criminal, or Military law, I’d really like to choose the best major tailored towards those subjects. On the other hand, since I recently was notified I was accepted into American University which has a highly accredited international studies program, I’ve been suggested that majoring in international affairs may also not be a major since I also have a passion for politics, largely due to the fact that law and politics seem to go hand-in-hand.

If there’s any advice you can recommend, it would be highly appreciated!

Cheers!

Major in what you like. It makes basically no difference in preparing for law school.I went to school with PoliSci majors (the most common), math majors, fine arts, and plenty of others. No major did better than any other major.

Definitely spend some time looking into internships with law firms. College is a very good time to help distinguish between the reality of law practice and the idea of law practice.

Major in what you like. Learn to read critically and to write coherently and fluidly. Those are the skills of a lawyer.
