Practice really does make perfect. 198 PSAT sophomore year --> 2310 SAT junior year. Just don’t give up and you will see results.
"5) For the essay, don’t start practicing until about a month before the exam since that is easily “manufactured” using the guide on CC entitled “How to write a 12 essay in 12 days”
Hi, new here, googled that guide and it didn’t showed up. Could someone please post a link? thanks in advance
@notigering that guide is likely no longer useful since the essay on the new sat is compltely different from the old. i had a friend improve 680 points on the old sat. he prepped for like 6 months, which is long, but he went to ivy league so good for him. I tried something else for Marhc 2016 sat and it worked pretty well, was really accurate, and didn’t take as long. sharing if others are curious

@triedntested Yes, I’d love to know how. Please PM me the process you used to get a high score. I haven’t taken the March one but I did take the May one, and plan on taking the one in October.
Hello everybody. I took the time yesterday to look over the new SAT. My tips for the new SAT are still very much relevant for some portions of the test. Math seems to have stayed mostly the same, while my tips for reading are still very much useful (reading the questions first and then reading the passage until the required line to answer the question). The writing section seems completely different. I would look into Erica Meltzer’s new SAT grammar guide. If it is anything like the previous version’s it is definitely worth its weight in gold.
Hey @spuding102, I was wondering what other extracurricular activities you were in involved in during high school? What other accomplishments or activities did you participate in that could have helped you get into college?
Hello my name is Sheila, I was reading your post after I started to look for tips on improving my SAT score. I know you were talking about the old SAT, but I still found your post very helpful. I feel kinda discouraged because I took my first SAT in May of this year( redesigned SAT). Afterwards, I took a summer SAT course for the second time, lasting from from June-July 8. Meanwhile, I have also been working on my own with Khan Academy. As you may or may not know, Khan partnered with college board to offer free online SAT prep. On that note, as I was reading your post I saw that you used 65 practice tests. Well, since I am taking the new test, I have already completed all four tests on my blue college board book. So my question is, since you had a lot of success test preping on your own, do you think a tutor would be helpful, or Khan academy ( this program looks like it has tons of passages, which I assume College board approved given the two companies’ recent partnership) would be sufficient on its own? I am also considering the priciness for yet another prep resource.I will greatly appreciate any advice you have. Your dedication and tips have influenced me to not give up on improving my score!
Thank you
I would not recommend such prep courses. They are generally expensive and ineffective. You can put in much more time on your own (and you can use your time as you see most fit for you) than you can taking a class that meets say twice a week for a couple of months.
@spuding102 hello I took for the first time the SAT and ACT. I got a 1010/1600 and on the ACT a 20. Math is were I really struggle the most it’s my last year of high school and I plan on studing out of state. What do you recommend for math should I try tutoring? I have been doing Khan academy but I’m more of a visual person and I don’t see any gains what should I do??? PS they offer help in school is it or will it be helpful in any way. Also I see you got in NYU? And I’m planning on doing the stern program how many subject tests are require and what scores also how should I prepare.
Thank you
