How Important are APs??

Hello,

I was deferred from EA to RD; my ACT was 32 and GPA is 3.85 unweighted. However, my school is a very competitive jesuit college prep school and our gpa system is a little different than most schools... anyways, we usually have 5-10 kids go to ND each year. I think I am a borderline candidate; I looked at some stats from my hs for last year's seniors who went to ND and there were a few kids with around a 3.8-3.85 at my school who got in with 32s on their ACTs.

However, those numbers dont say anything about the classes those people took; I currently have 2 APs and 3 honors classes, making for 4 APs total and 6 Honors classes total in 4 years of hs. Also, I took a summer class at a community college last summer... does my class load look up to par??? Or am I lacking in the AP department?

Thanks for the help!

It depends on how many APs are offered at your school. My high school had AP track in science, math, english, history, and foreign language. I graduated with 7 APs, but that was pretty much standard for my high school and the kids in the honors program there. Lots of other schools don't offer as many, it's really about challenging yourself as much as you can.

Son's HS offered no APclasses per se, however, when he applied (accepted fall '05 EA), he had already studied and taken 5 AP exams and 3 SATII exams. His HS did not teach the AP Curriculum, but kids were offered the op to study and take the exams. Hope that helps!

In general AP course and hence AP exams taken and passed are the best indicator of college succes. (I'm not going to argue about this point with anyone, jut take it for what it is that good grades in AP courses are a better statistical indicator of college success than an test scores; this is the factor that Newsweek uses to rank high schools) Anyway, I couldn't tell you what is a competitive course load, as many advanced classes as you can handle (and your school offers) is a good rule of thumb. I personally took 9 between junior and senior year (and balked on Latin to go to a league championship track meet) but my school offered 15 or 16. It's a bit late to change schedules, just ride it out. Whatever God as planned will come to fruition.
