How important are clubs, volunteer work, and other extracurricular activities? It seems like its mainly Test Scores, GPA, and research. I'm interested in civil/structural engineering.

You have it right. Extracurriculars are not important.

oh yeah what about race? does race play a role in admissions? Aren't graduate schools, public and private, allowed to use affirmative action or something like that? If so do schools usually practice it?

I'm not really sure about that. Was it UMich law school that was sued a couple years back?

The undergrad admissions was sued first, then the law school.

Private schools can do whatever they want, and most of them, probably all of them, practice AA.

AA has been banned in a number of states, meaning the public universities of those states. The private universities in those states may still practice it.
