How important are professor recs?

Hi, I just wanted to know what parts of my application will be exceptionally strong…
I have lots of ideas, but it’s hard for me to communicate them into a strong essay…

I will have a professor from a university writing a rec for me… how impactful is it going to be?

Any feedback is appreciated, thank you very much!!

The most impactful recommendations are from people that can speak in detail about some facet of your life (e.g. academics, work ethic, leadership, sports). The story they tell about you is more important than the title of the person telling the story. So if you’ve taken classes from this professor and he/she can talk about your academic performance and preparation for college, go for it.

Good luck!

Could also be that you assisted them for a summer or something too. Doesn’t have to specifically be class but I think magtf1’s real point (with which I agree) is that the prof has to actually know you and be able to discuss you in depth. A connection who met you once or a family friend who has never interacted with you in a “professional” context and is writing a letter as a favor to your parents isn’t going to mean anything.
