How important is a 5 on an AP exam?

I recently discovered I got a 5 on the Apush exam. Will this help me a lot in applying for colleges? I don’t really know how rare it is to get a 5 so any opinions will help

Congratulations & well done! About 10% of people taking USH get a 5. Sadly, though, it won’t be a big factor in admissions. Unless you are applying to the UK, it will be a nice, but small, extra to your overall package.

Unless if you add your scores as a supplement or list them on the common app they will not even be seen. If so, they will only be glanced at but not really given consideration, unless if they don’t match your grades in the class at all or you have many self-studies above what your high school offers.

Well I had a B+ for the year in the class. My class is very difficult, very very few people actually got an A in the class. I’ll for sure want colleges to see I got a 5 though

Some of the more selective schools may use AP scores to put your GPA in context (eg a 5 on the APUSH exam combined with a C or B in the class may indicate grade deflation). But generally AP scores are not considered in the admissions process.

Hopefully Emory sees this!

One AP 5 may not mean much - BUT - string a few more 5s together and you might have enough credits to graduate early, or get a masters in 4 years, like my son was able to do. Thanks to his AP scores he entered school as a “Freshman with Sophomore Standing”.

All of which is true, but the OP specifically asked if it would help in admissions, which it won’t. Great job, though.

Some “test-flexible” schools will allow you to use multiple AP scores instead of the SAT/ACT, but that’s just a small subset.

Colleges really tend not to look at APs- but it can help give context to your grades, and demonstrate mastery. A 5 is impressive, so include it.

It may or may not. Many colleges are holistic, so they look at everything you submit.
How they weigh stuff is up to them.

If a college’s admissions is holistic, a 5 demonstrates that your B+ was earned. This might be helpful if your high school is not well known to a college that you’re applying to.
