Hai,

This is Ria from India. I am going to apply to US univs for fall-2011 Ph.D (ECE)

I did my master in ECE from NIT Trichy (One of the Top college in India) with CGPA-8.3/10

But i did bad in GRE (Q : 640 ; V: 350 ; AWA : 2.5 )

I am very much worried with my GRE score specially my AWA score. How important is my AWA score for PhD admission?

I have two ACM and IEEE papers

Could anyone please tell me my Chances of admission in Clemson Univ and Univ of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am worried with my awa score.

While the AWA score is probably the least important thing on your application, I suspect a 2.5 might raise some questions. I’d try to get that score up to a 3.5, if not a 4 or 4.5. But if I were you, I’d worry more about the 640Q. Since you’re applying for an engineering degree, your Q score should ideally be in the high 700s. And I really don’t want to sound discouraging, but you might want to pull your V score up just a bit too. It doesn’t need to be in the high 700s or even in the 600s, but something in the 500s would be fine, I’d think.

Do you have time to take the GRE again? If you do, get a book and just study it religiously for a week or two. The AWA has a fixed format they’re looking for, the math just requires practice and time management and you probably just need to memorize a couple hundred words for the verbal. If you don’t have time, don’t fret about it. Just try to make the other parts of your application stand out.
