How important is Junior year of High School?

I didn’t do so good this year. 1 A, 4 B’s, and 3 C’s. My UW GPA dropped from 3.65 to a 3.33. My weighted GPA went from 4.2 to 4.04. Freshman year GPA was 3.64 and Sophomore year GPA was 3.62. I know that everyone says junior year is the most important and I screwed it all up. I’m not planning to apply to any top schools, most schools on my list are state schools with acceptances rates above 60%. Can a bad Junior year affect my chances to lower tier schools? If someone had a 2.75 GPA and keep that GPA consistent will my bad year look better or worse? I’ve been bringing my grades up from first semester and improving my study habits. Hoping to get some A’s senior year.

Junior is one part of your 4 year high school career. Junior and Senior year are the most important, in different ways. Your GPA is still excellent. Get ready for Senior year and work hard. There are stilll many good schools that you can get into.

It sounds like you have a sensible college goal that is reasonable for your GPA, so just do your best to apply yourself in your senior year and you should have a good shot applying to larger state schools with 60% acceptance.

Work on SAT prep and get a good score, and make sure that senior year will show improvement.

^I agree. Plus don’t you still have a 4.0 W GPA? That is excellent GPA regardless if you had a bad year and if you score highly on the SAT, and start off well senior year you will be fine.

So you are asking if it’s better to have a low but consistent GPA vs. a higher GPA than takes a downturn and ends up around the same GPA as the person with the low consistent GPA? Does it matter? You are in the latter category.

How will it effect your chances? Most state schools admissions are driven by GPA and test score. Check the Common Data Set for each school to which you are applying. Google it. Go to Section C and look at where you fall in the distribution relative to GPA and test scores. Even better, if your school subscribes to Naviance, check out the grades and test scores of those from your school who were admitted to your target schools in prior years.

What do you call “lower-tier”? SUNY Plattsburgh? Wartburg? Bloomsburg?

How much can your parents afford to pay? With your GPA, you’re unlikely to get much merit, unless your flagship looks at weighted (such as Penn State, UAlabama, the entire Florida system).

Junior year is important. However, you need to excel in athose 4 years in High School. If there’s a year that you didn’t focused on, try giving your best to the other years, most especially in Senior year.

I agree junior year is very important. Apply wisely and you should be fine. More importantly, you should try to think about why this year was so difficult and if there are any steps you can take to improve your study skills etc. as you approach your senior year of HS and college.

I have the same scenario as you man, except I only had one a, three b’s, three C’s and I failed a class.Everything this year just stressed me out. But on the other hand, I felt that my teachers kinda screwed with my grade. Idk what my UW gpa is now(since they stop showing it on our report card), but it’s probably like a 3.0 now. If you score well on the act or the sat than the majority of the ones who got accepted then I say you’ll have a good chance. Shoot, I’m planning to make all a’s if I can this senior year. Hopefully, things could work out so colleges look at these straight A’s to get me in. L-)

Yea I had a few issues with my History teacher. I started spring semester with 3 C’s and 1 B but I was able to bring them up to 4 B’s. I’m taking 3 AP classes next year. 1 online and 2 at a neighboring high school. Even if you have to settle for a low tier school you could always do great in college and get into a decent graduate program. One of the English teachers at our school started at East Carolina, which is considered by some a lower tier party school in NC (no offense I actually like ECU), and went to UVA for her Masters.

how do u take an ap class online @wiliyamMSL

It depends on whether your state has a virtual public school. I’m in NC and we have NCVPS. As for taking the actual class, it’s a lot like self studying for an AP exam except I have weekly assignments. AP Environmental is fairly easy. AP Computer Science makes me cry sometimes.

Don’t take AP class online to look good for admissions. Just take it if you are interested or want college credit. Only take easy AP Classes by your self (Psychology, Human Geography, Environment, Statistics)

@SternBusiness is right. I learned the hard way. AP Computer Science is really hard to learn on my own. I’ll likely get a C in the class. Luckily I also have AP Environmental which is fairly easy. I have a solid B in that class now.
