How important is the Combined English/Writing score?

I have a composite score of 35 with the breakdown -

English - 35
Reading - 34
Math - 33
Science - 36

However, I received an essay score of 8 and this makes my combined english/writing score a 31. Should I retake it? How seriously do colleges look at the combined english/writing score as opposed to the composite score?

I plan on applying to some ivy leagues and mostly highly competitive universities next year.

Don’t worry about it. It’s the least important subscore on the test.

Don’t retake - a 35 is a great score and nobody cares about the writing… just write great essays though

My D got a 33 composite with an 8 writing score. She had a 35 in English so a combined English/Writing score of 31. Should she retake it? How important is that writing score especially for merit aid consideration. Her GPA, class rank, are outstanding with tons of APs.

No, she doesn’t have to retake it. The combined eng/writing score doesn’t even matter or affect the composite.

lol I’m so relieved by hearing this
I have a composite of 32 and that really is like my max
and altho I’m more like a comp sci person, I’m aiming at something like Cornell yet I get an 8 in the essay
so yea lol

My question is…if the writing score is so worthless, then why do so many schools require it?
