How important is the essay?

Hey guys,

I'm currently a prospective transfer student. My GPA isn't doing too well so I was wondering how much does a really good personal statement count for? I visited the school and it's amazing so I really want to attend. Also, since I'd be applying as a [second semester ] sophomore, I wouldn't be required to take any tests but if I did take them and did well, will the good score on them help my application? Finally, I didn't do any ECs in college due to lack of time (working full time), will that take away or do they like it when you have a job? Would it be too late to start now? I just want to try to strengthen up my application in the ways that I can since I don't think my GPA can raise much from now to when I apply. Thanks for your help! (Applying for Fall 2010)

Vela,

W&M reviews the transfer personal statement (which should address why you want to transfer to W&M) to see if you’ve thought through the transfer process and to evaluate your writing skills. A good essay will help but it may not make up for other shortcomings.

Since tests are optional for transfers after the freshman year it’s up to you but taking them now is likely not terribly useful.

It might be good for you to attend a prospective transfer event at W&M to learn more about the admission process and to speak with a transfer admission dean ([Prospective Transfer Days | Admission](http://web.wm.edu/admission/transferdaysrsvp.php?svr=www))
