I'm a Junior who is considering selective universities.
Although I got 4.0 unweighted gpa in this first semester, I got only 4.2 weighted gpa.
To raise my weighted gpa, should I quit taking some regular classes and take some online AP classes? Since I've already finished two online AP classes in this semester, I can surely finish two more APs on the time and get A's. I'm sure that if I would do this, I would get about 4.6 gpa.

But weighted gpa is so important?? Do selective universities care about weighted one as well as unweighted one?

They don’t really care about the number because every school weights GPA differently. They care about the unweighted and whether or not you took rigorous classes.

My school doesn’t have many honors classes, and we don’t even weight GPA, but the highest possible GPA in theory at my school is like a 4.3.
I don’t think it’s possible to have a 5.0 weighted unless you take all honors classes, which isn’t even possible at most places.

Yeah. Actually, any students in my school have to take religion class, so the highest gpa is no more than 4.8.

I won’t quit taking my current regular classes. But I’ll take as many AP classes as possible to show that I’m capable of taking rigorous classes.

I agree with this completely. Our school doesn’t even weight GPA’s, and I ended up fine in the end. I would think that in order for colleges to standardize GPA’s for admissions, they would look at the unweighted GPA’s of everyone and then see what courses they took.

Some colleges have a standardized method of calculating weighted GPAs for their own purposes (California and Florida public schools, for example).

Others just look at the courses and grades holistically.

Since i’m going to apply to some of UCs, I’m kinda worried by how the grading system of uc affects my gpa.

My classes:
Elective
US History
English III
PE
Religion III
AP Statistics
(The following is my online classes)
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC
AP Physics C Mechanics (from the next semester)
AP Physics C E&M (same)
AP Biology (maybe)

I wish my classes would look rigorous to universities of my choice.

Here is how CSU calculates GPA:
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)
UC is the same, except that if 12th grade course grades are available, CSU counts them but UC does not (no difference if you apply as a high school senior).

You can look up what courses satisfy what a-g requirements and what courses count as honors as a California public or private high school here:
