How is bowdoin's neuroscience program?

i got a viewbook from them and it seems to have a fairly decent amount of space dedicated to neuroscience… can anyone comment on the major and the resources available to students?

bump!

(I’m also particularly curious about the true accessibility of neuroscience research opportunities in general, and specifically to underclassmen – I got a vague impression from somewhere on the Bowdoin website that such opportunities tend to crop up mostly for upperclassmen…)

Hi! bowdoin neuroscience grad here. came across this post while looking at forums for graduate programs I am currently applying to.

I am perhaps a bit biased, but I thought the neuro program at bowdoin was great. Although there only a few dedicated neuroscience profs (4, 5 now maybe?) I always felt like their expertise and research was well spread across the landscape of neuroscience research. Despite there only being a few labs, research opportunities are definitely available, including for underclassmen. You just need to be proactive and serious about doing the work. All the neuroscience faculty are incredibly friendly/approachable and want students to come learn by working in their labs. I finally got around to doing an independent study project in a lab during my final semester and was kicking myself for not starting earlier (ie summers). Research opportunities are available as independent study courses and over the summer. If you want to start research early-on (as a first-year perhaps) they can probably make it happen although it may depend on your knowledge and you would probably have to wait at least a semester.

Just one person’s opinion, and I could definitely go on about any questions/how much I enjoyed the program
