How is Cal Poly for Materials?

I at first wanted to be a bio major at UC’s to go to med school, but im not sure yet now due to heavy loans and stressI am also interested in chemE because I find it interesting especially converting raw stuff to useful products with chem and math knowledge.
I wanted to go to UCSB for chemE bc its good campus and academics. I also looked into SLO whcih was great- but sadly no ChemE.
I also recently was interested in materials.
Hoever UCSB doesn’t have it. SLO does. I am not sure what i wanna do. However matE and chemE both sound hard, but chemE sounds scarier due t more classes.

anyways…
how is Cal Poly for Materials Engineering? like how hard are classes, how many people get weeded out, are professor good, how are labs, internships, clubs, jobs for Materials?

If you have specific questions, you might want to contact the department along with requesting an Engineering tour. Also CPP only has a Materials Engineering minor.

Improve Quality of Life | Chemical & Materials Engineering Department
Vilupanur A. Ravi, Ph.D., Chair 909.869.2626
The Chemical & Materials Engineering Department prepares engineers for a career in the development and application of processes that involve chemical and physical materials transformations. This includes work related to the design, construction and operation of plants for fuels, plastics, bers, foods and pharmaceuticals. Because of their strong background in chemistry and materials processing, many chemical engineers also work for industry as environmental engineers. A Materials Engineering minor emphasizes ceramics, polymers, metals and alloys. Degrees offered are:
• Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE)
• Master of Science in Engineering with Emphasis in Materials (MSEMTE)

Chemical Engineering Major with Materials Engineering Minor
Materials Engineering relates the properties of materials to their structure. All engineers are called upon to work on new ideas and with novel materials. Almost every field of engineering is limited by the properties of available materials. The graduate with an understanding of the principles of materials behavior possesses a decided career advantage.

The College of Engineering provides a minor in Materials Engineering to the student who satisfactorily completes 24-units requirement within her/his major curriculum. It is frequently possible for students to complete the minor within the normal requirements for an engineering degree through careful advisement including authorized substitutions.

Requirements for the MTE Minor

Core Courses (Total number of required units = 12)
Materials Science and Engineering MTE 207 (3)
Materials Science and Engineering Lab MTE 317L (1)
Strength of Materials ME 218 (3)
Strength of Materials Lab ME 220L (1)
Chemical & Materials Engineering ThermoI CHE 302 (4)
MTE Elective Courses (Total number of required units = 12)
Take any three of the following courses for a total of 12 units (one will be satisfied with CHE elective)
Mechanical Metallurgy/ Laboratory MTE 320/L (3/1)
Fracture and Failure Analysis MTE 422 (4)
Physical Metallurgy/Laboratory MTE 406/416L (3/1)
Corrosion and Materials Degradation/Laboratory MTE 401 (3/1)
Ceramic Materials/Laboratory MTE 407/L (3/1)
Introduction to Composite Materials/Laboratory MTE 408/418L (3/1)
Polymer Engineering/Laboratory MTE 303/L

i was actually referring to SLO so…

You posted in the CPP thread, but my answer would be the same. Contact the Materials department, ask for an Engineering tour and get your questions answered by them directly.

lol idk how my post got changed to a different thread

anywyas how is the SLO area for Jobs and internships?

One the frequent posters :eyemgh: gave you the link to look up what type of jobs are available for graduated students in each particular major. Although self-reported, it will give you an idea that SLO graduates are employable.

Many companies recruit from SLO so jobs and internship opportunities are available. You need to seek out these opportunities on your own, attend some job fairs while on campus, look up information through the career center and utilize Linked In.

does anyone know how many undergrads there are for MatE at Cal Poly SLO?
other ppl on reddit and cc say like 30-50 in MatE
however on the website https://mate.calpoly.edu/current-students it says there are 200 students (is this for undegrrad only as there is no MS program for materials)
but on https://careers.calpoly.edu/search.php only 36 students graduate materials engineering
does anyone have an idea about this?
