How is commuting by train?

I was thinking about commuting by train to stony next term. As much as I like having a roomate and potentialy making a friend, I have had 4 roomates so far and did not make good friends with any of them, most of the time I was annoyed. So I have two questions, does stony brook release who your roomate is before class start for returning student?

And does anyone here commute by train (I was going to get a place in port jeff)? if so, how is it? I am just tired of the [overpriced] campus food and accomodations. But I know that commuting, I will want to get in and get out as quickly as possible, especially if I am commuting by train.

I usually drive but I occasionally take the train from Hicksville. It takes about an hour each way and the fare is $8 round trip. Driving takes me about 45 minutes, but when you consider the price of gas the train is much cheaper. However, service is infrequent (trains run about every hour or so) and I usually have to connect at Huntington.

From Port Jefferson, the ride takes only 10 minutes, service is more frequent, and the round trip fare is about $4.50. Buy your ticket before you board in order to save money. You can also buy a weekly or monthly ticket to save money.

I would not recommend commuting from the city. The ride from Penn takes about 2 hours and the fare is about $20 round trip.

Plus now, they are doing construction on the tracks and the commute takes even longer since ppl need to take busses.
