Any information on Fordham’s history program and specifics on internships? Thanks
I can’t say for sure, but i have only heard good things. A lot of the professors are great—especially Maginn.
Thanks Matachines! Good to hear and will remember that name. Hoping to go to Fordham!
The only history classes my daughter took are the ones required by the core. But she LOVED Meyers. She had him this summer for Crime and Punishment in Europe and it was a very interesting class. She participated in debates and he was one professor who really encouraged her to speak her mind. If she could take another class given by him, she would sign up in a minute. In freshman year she had Daniel Soyer and even though he is a tough grader, she had a new appreciation for NYC history.
I also reiterate what @Matachines said. A lot of the professors are great.
I always cringe at threads like this. Its just a pet peeve of mine. I think students should do some “research” both on CC where there are numerous and annual threads on subjects like this, and also on the Fordham website. Check out the course offerings and professors and their credentials. The concentrations within the major.
There are overlapping majors and concentrations as well, like CACS.
Finally, Fordham is a behemoth…a very very strong Jesuit liberal arts college. History, necessarily, is a huge component of that strength.
My kid was a CACS scholar and History major. Its a very very rigorous major. Its not for the meek and wannabes. Its for students who come ready to be challenged and work like dogs, a lot of reading and a hideous number of papers to write. Its rewarding. It can be doubled up with minors in every other department. It can be doubled with an area studies major or language. It can be doubled up with Theology or Philosophy or whatever.
There are many many awesome professors in History at Fordham, both at RH and at LC. My kid took History courses at BOTH campuses and thrived…exhausted…often in tears…but thrived.
The internships are a measure of where you are…CACS has a lot of wonderful internships in Manhattan and the Bronx. My kid did fabulous internships in both places, plus a summer fellowship in another location. Her mentors were awesome…still friends today. But she had to earn them…with superior effort and scholarship.
Graduate schools were there for her picking when she graduated…many many offers. She went with the best financial offer (turning down NYU and Columbia among others.)
Its what YOU make of it. No department is perfect and no department is jerk-free. LOL. There was one in the History department and he is still there, but it was dealt with.
She had Maginn and Soyer and several others that were fabulous. Just fabulous. Life changing sort of stuff.
I hope this helps, but the students need to do some research for themselves and come prepared to work.
I think CC is as good a place as any to ask people about their particular experience with a department at Fordham. There aren’t a lot of places to research that sort of thing. Professors can have wonderful credentials and publications (which I understand can be looked up online) but may not be great classroom teachers.
Anyway, my experience was similar to post #1 – I had two history classes at Fordham RH (loved one, the other was required and I’d say it was OK). Overall I hear it is a good department.
Sorry I can’t offer any information about internships in that department.
Correct…not all credentials equals good teaching skills. That is true at every college wthout exception. And someimes its just personality differences…every student is different.
Fordham’s History Program is amazing. So is Theology. So are many other liberal arts programs. Dont decide a major until end of Freshmen year. Give it time…
Internships depend on programs…and professors. My kid had one in Upper West Side…awesome and recommended by a professor. Then another one in South Bronx that was life changing and unbelievably rewarding.
Some kids want jobs in Manhattan in communications and media and so forth. The very best students get the very best internships.
And then there was the time that U2 showed up on campus one Friday morning for a FREE concert. AWESOME.
Thanks very much sovereigdebt and MomtheChauffer. Have been off CC but was accepted early action today!
Thinking about what you said SD- hideous number of papers…but love history and can not envision another major.
Sounds like your daughter had great experience at Fordham- thanks again!
