Hi,
Since we live in CA, it's not very convenient and cheap for us to go to MU for Summer welcome. I'm wondering how important this program for freshmen? Will our D. miss a lot? We already visited the campus and she made her choice.
We planned to come there a week before classes start. Is it ok? What disadvantages can she have because of that?

Don't they meet with an advisor and register for classes during Summer Welcome? I went with my daughter four years ago and I really think she could have gone herself to be honest. I'd send her alone if money is an issue....

It is expensive, especially for those of us on a coast! This probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but we and our son found it extremely valuable, and we're glad we spent the money. The main advantage is meeting with your advisor and signing up for classes (and ordering books for pickup in Aug.). You probably could send her by herself, or just with one parent. This year, they also had a special session at move-in time for those who didn't make it to Summer Welcome.

A suggestion: Call and ask how your daughter signs up for classes early if she does not go to Summer Welcome. Can she have a phone conference with the advisor? I would call the j-school directly, or the honors college. (Honors journalism students have advisors in the honors college.)

Thank you for your answers. I'd not like to send her alone, because she even will need to spend a night in a hotel before the program starts.
We'll call there first, and if it's very recommended, I'll go with her.

The airfare is expensive from Dallas also. We still fly her home at Thanksgiving and Spring Break and the cheap fares have all but disappeared in the last couple of years. If you need to send her on her own, you could ask if she could spend an early night in the dorm. If not, the Hampton Inn is right adjacent to campus or there used to be a B&B right off campus, where she could walk. You might feel safer that way? Has she met other students from your area on Facebook that might go with her? Or maybe she could meet up with someone there? And I second the suggestion on calling the Honors people to help you, if that applies.

Thank you, mizzou_ mom. I think I'll go with her at least to show her where and how to use the shuttle service :-) We rented a car while were visiting the campus and surrounding area and plan to rent it again in August helping her to move in a dorm.
I'm sure we will have her also at Thanksgiving and Spring Break; I've already printed out Academic Calendar for 2009-2010 :-) It seems like about 5 months (out of 12) she can spend at home, at least during freshmen year, not bad....
I know that she met on Facebook a boy from South Korea :-) , who was accepted to the School of Journalism also, but not from CA yet.

If my mom didn't go with me to Summer Welcome, I would of felt so incredibly lost. i'm also from CA and I felt a lot better about mizzou after summer welcome. Also, side note, there are some dorms open over breaks. I know that Lathrop is currently one!
