How is Irvine Valley College?

I might not be able to afford UCI/UCD (where I applied to), and so I'm considering attending community college first. How is Irvine Valley College with regards to academics (classes, professors, etc) and extra-curriculars? I've passed by the campus several times already and I like the environment, Irvine being one of the safest cities and all.

You tell me.

Thanks for the link, I visited that site before. I posted here because I wanted feedback from students of IVC, or those who know people who go there, so that I can get insights other than stats posted on their site and on collegeboard. Anyway, thanks for your time.

Bump, now that I’m sure I’ll be attending IVC… Any current students? I’d like to know especially how fast classes fill up, my enrollment window for Fall 2011 opens 7/28 (registration starts 7/12) :|

You’ll most likely be petitioning. Classes are a b!t¢h to get into the first quarter, but after you have taken a quarter it is easier to get your courses. They fill up fast.

I’m thinking of transferring to IVC also. I’ll be finishing up my first year at PCC and I’m also wondering the same thing…

I was afraid of that… Are profs easy to talk to re: petitioning? Or does petitioning work like how other schools have waitlists?

I haven’t been there but I know a girl who goes there and she says it’s first-class to some other other CCs like Santa Ana College.

Some professors make a waitlist and give priority to those who EMAIL them first… there are generally 2-5 adds per class.

A lot of the professors do the lotto method and let you pick a number, etc. It’s not easy to talk to the professors about adding because there are so many people that want to add and are in your boat. It’s really all luck whether or not you get in.

I see… All up to luck then. Thanks for the info!

I live near SAC actually, but I’d rather go to IVC because when i visited both, I found the latter’s environment more for me.

It’s great. I’m currently a student here and I love the environment.

it’s ok. In terms of academics, it depends on what teacher you get. I use ratemyprofessors to let me know if a professor is good or not. If a professor has a lot of good reviews, I’m more willing to take him or her than a professor who has all-around bad reviews.

Classes fill up pretty quickly, especially the core classes like math, writing, and science. If you’re a new student, your registration date will be later than continuing students since continuing students get registration priority and get to sign up for classes first. Classes with professors who have really good reviews on ratemyprofessor also fills up quickly. For example, Professor Etter (who teaches Writing 1 and 2)'s classes always get full within the first two days of online registration because he’s popular among the students.
