Ohhh boy. IVC->UCI

I'm not sure where to post this, but this seemed as good a place as any.

tl;dr: I want to transfer from IVC to UCI as a Political Science major, and I have some questions at the end of this post!

I'm in a rather difficult position. After graduating from high school, having been rejected from UC Irvine (the only school I had any desire to go to), I opted to begin the process of enlisting in the Air Force. A few months later, I came to my senses and realized I have certain aspirations that would not be possible if I spent the next decade or so in the military (training, active duty, reserve duty, etc), and that my reasons for enlisting were total bull anyway (escapism, dodging responsibilities). So I enrolled for the spring semester at IVC.

Unfortunately, all this happened a little too late. The spring semester just started today, and I am basically clueless. I want to pursue a Political Science major at UCI, and I just found this information today. I signed up for my classes looking only at the "General Education" tab in the MAP at MySite, and even then, I only got three classes, one of which starts in March. One thing I do have going for me is the fact that I took six APs, of which four or five count for credit, so that should cushion the blow of my cluelessness at least a little.

I want to be as proactive about this as possible; I believe the reason I didn't get into UCI that first time was because my inclination to put things off wreaked havoc on my schoolwork. I believe I could have gotten A's in basically every class I had if I had just cared enough to do my homework (which is saying something considering the school I went to, University High in Irvine, wasn't exactly a joke). I've done a lot more research and I'm planning to spend all of tomorrow petitioning for more classes, but even in the extremely unlikely event that I land all of them, I'm only looking at three or four classes since I didn't petition for anything today (and I have no idea whether that means it's too late). I want to talk to a counselor, but I don't understand the process involved at all, and the website is too glitchy and unreliable for me to get too much from it.

I applied to UCI again for 2011 but considering nothing's changed (except the fact that I blew a year talking to airmen and doing a lot of waiting at the San Diego Military Entrance Processing Stations), I'm not even going to consider that going through.

On top of that, I work, but only fifteen hours or so a week. I guess I'm willing to quit if it helps, but I don't think I'm informed enough to make use of the extra time, and my family's.. too poor to support me going to school without contributing.

Is anyone here currently at IVC/Saddleback or an IVC transfer to any UC? I would really appreciate some help and at the very least it'd be comforting to know I have someone to ask.

I reread this post and it felt like it was nothing but a big chunk of whining, so here are some actual questions that would be helpful to have answered:

The page detailing what APs gave what credit seems to have disappeared. The page only mentioned English Language (junior year AP at my school, which I didn't take) but didn't mention English Literature (senior year AP at my school, which I did take). Did I just take the wrong AP, or is there a chance that the English Lit AP does the same job? Also, it might be the other way around and it was Lit that was mentioned, and Language that I took.

IVC will not give me credit for my United States History AP. Will I ever get anything for it after I transfer, considering I took it in sophomore year and I think I can't use AP results after four years anyway?

What do I need to do if I want to transfer as quickly as possible? Is it possible considering my situation to transfer by the end of 2011?

How important is taking Honors for a transfer applicant? Is GPA/prereqs all they look at? Do I not need to worry about extracurriculars, community service, awards, etc anymore?

If I only manage to petition successfully for one or less classes tomorrow, am I screwed?

Can someone reassure me, pat me on the head, and tell me I can do this? :(

background: I was a 3.3/3.6 high school student with a 2100 and no notable EC's except three years of the lowest orchestra and a year of audition-only choir. No athletics except for a semester in senior year due to rib/lung issues.

Don’t be bummed out that you didn’t get into UCI straight out of high school. It is pretty competitive.

Going from CC –> UCI is simple through TAG. If you qualify for it though. You need a 3.0, IGETC, English, and math done.

http://www.admissions.uci.edu/pdf/TAG_brochure_fall2011.pdf</a></p>

Here are the pre-reqs for the poli sci major from IVC:
[ASSIST Report: IRVINE 10-11 UCI Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)
You should focus on finishing this along with IGETC.

Honors classes are useful if you interested in getting into the CHP straight from CC to UC without applying for it. There is a program where you get into UCI’s honors program straight from CC if you finished the honor’s program at your CC. The CHP has many benefits like priority registration (biggest plus!).

I think honors is also good if you are aiming for the regents scholarship for UCI.

all I can say is that it is unlikely that you will transfer in a year, considering you are petitioning for classes right now. one-year transfers should be on top of their schedules and have a buttload of classes already. also, Honors is important if you want to get into UCLA or Berkeley, but it might be overkill for UCI.

I went to IVC for two semesters…school was lame! It’s nice though, Irvine is a very peaceful town. what you need to do is see a counselor…IVC actually has some pretty good counselors and they can help you out a lot. IVC seems to be a feeder school into UCI…most of the transfers at IVC go to UCI. shouldn’t be difficult.

just bust out As in community college classes. Aim for a 3.5+ GPA, it shouldn’t be hard, you’re generally surrounded by idiots(excluding the math/science classes which are filled with poor, but bright people) and should be at a comparative advantage.

just go to assist.org and knock out all the required classes. With careful planning, you might even be able to transfer after only a single year, as in this time one year from now you might be in. Just get 60(90quarter) units.

FYI, you WILL get credit for ALL your APs at UCI.

I went to OCC. I slacked and wasted 3 years there instead of 1, if I’d known of this site, I’d have saved a lot of time.

I’m currently a student at IVC…so I’ll do my best to share what I’ve learned so far about the transfer process.

Background: 2nd year IVC student, hoping to transfer to UCSD.

First off… what iTransfer said was pretty much right on the money with regards to the TAG and major pre-reqs. But keep in mind that the TAGs are different for each UC. For UCI…I believe the requirements are: 3.0+, math/english done by the summer of the year prior to transferring, and “all required coursework for chosen major including course prerequisites and minimum course GPA”. I didn’t see anything about completion of IGETC, but I might have missed it so I could be wrong about that requirement.

Question 1-2:
I don’t know too much about the AP credit thing. But the counselors are very helpful with that kind of stuff. Since you mentioned you don’t know how to meet with one…this is the way I do it…

Go to this site and call the number: [IVC- Counseling Center](http://www.ivc.edu/counseling/Pages/default.aspx)

Ask to make an appointment with a counselor for academic planning (they schedule these every 2 weeks or something)

They’ll give you some dates/times that are available and then ask for your student ID to confirm it.

That’s it.
BTW…I STRONGLY recommend you meet with one. They’ll help you plan out your courses and can answer some of your questions.

Question 3:
Based on your major (Poli Sci) and school (UCI), I think the best thing to do is finish the pre-reqs for your major (which iTransfer has already linked) as soon as you can, and apply for the TAG. Your main focus should be GPA and Pre-Reqs, rather than IGETC. These are the reasons why I would take this route (which I wish I did during my first year at IVC):

Should your TAG fail for any reason, you can still apply as a regular transfer. And as a regular transfer…the most important thing to the UCs are GPA and Pre-Requisites. Sure, IGETC is nice…but it does not complete all the classes for your major. This gives you a good fallback plan, should anything go wrong.

For my transfer year (this might change in the future though), almost all the UC’s TAGs required the major pre-reqs to be completed. The only exception was UCSD which required a 3.0, IGETC, and english/math done by fall prior to transfer. In your case, UCI requires them to be done.

If you take IGETC (basically gen. ed), you may be taking classes that won’t apply to your major…which only delays you from completing all the pre-reqs. But pre-reqs can also satisfy some gen. ed areas. Therefore, when you transfer…you’ll have completed all your pre-reqs and only have a few, if any, gen. ed classes left.

I would also recommend you complete the English/Math courses first, as that will also help with the TAG requirements. If you do decide to go for the TAG…MAKE SURE YOU MEET EVERY REQUIREMENT or else it will be void.

Unfortunately…I don’t THINK its possible to transfer by the end of 2011…there’s simply too many classes to take, and you also have to account for the classes you might not get (the IVC classes fill up VERY VERY fast). But like xelink said, you MIGHT be able to with careful planning.

Question 4:
Well Honors can only help you…but honestly, I think it’s only useful for UCB/UCLA/UCSD.
Again, your main priorities are: GPA AND PRE-REQS. Don’t take the risk in doing poorly in an honor’s class unless you are sure you can do well. iTransfer does bring up a good point though about the scholarship. Extracurriculars/awards/community service are not as important (unless you apply to UCB/UCLA), but again…it can only help you, right?

Question 5:
Well you won’t be screwed…you’ll just have to make it up during the summer and the other semesters. Think optimistically though…you can use that time to help you adjust and also start off with a 4.0 :]

Question 6:
Don’t worry so much! You can do it! Best of luck! :D

I hope I was able to help. Keep in mind, everything I said is based on my experience and understanding during my time here. So if anyone finds an error, feel free to correct me.

Thank you guys so much; I’ll definitely make use of all this information! I didn’t even know about TAG until now, hahaha…

Again, thanks! I feel much more confident about what I’m doing now, and I’ll meet with a counselor ASAP.
