How is PSU?

Please rate PSU-UP on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the highest; 10 being the lowest) for each of these:

Social Life:
Location:
Prestige:
Education:
People/Friendliness:
Academic (General):
Academic (Mathematics Major):
Overall Undergrad Experience:

Social Life: 2 - A lot to do, would be rated a 1 if greek life was slightly less prevalent.

Location: 1 - The best college town in the country. Lower if you prefer big city life.

Prestige: 3 - It doesn't have the wow factor of Harvard or Stanford, but the quality of education is there if you're willing to work.

Education: 1 - Excellent education for self-starters. There is very little hand-holding though, which corresponds with the way things are in the real world. As a result, you're better prepared for a job, grad, or professional school.

People/Friendliness: 2 - People are very friendly, in general, and there are enough of them around so that anyone can find a niche. School spirit is second to none.

Academic (General): 3 - Excellent in physical and biological sciences, mathematics and statistics, engineering, and social sciences. Also communications and earth science are very good. Not as strong in history or political science, though econ is strong. Business school has a very good reputation.

Academic (Mathematics Major): 2 - I was a math and astronomy/astrophysics major, now in grad school for computational math at Stanford. My preperation placed me near the median in my classes at Stanford. Probably a little better for statistics then math, though both are good.

Overall Undergrad Experience: 1 - I'm happy I went to Penn State instead of Stanford (which I now attend for grad school), as Penn State was a lot more fun, and the education was equivalent. The only thing Penn State lacks is the wow factor. However, the extremely strong alumni network makes up for this slight deficenciy.

kcs149, may I ask what your undergrad gpa was? GRE? What factors from Penn State were important in your admission to grad school at Stanford?

Thanks for you input kcs149. I would like to ask you these same questions. Do you think it will be a good idea to study mathematics at PSU and then Stanford if I want to become a math professor at a college?
