Do you think Penn State has a good reputation?

Just curious, I live in PA and I hear good and bad things about Penn State. It advertises itself as a prestigious state school but I see nobody on here saying they want to go to PSU.

wrong forum — although, i wouldn’t know where to put such a question.

many national schools in the local area and local vocational schools advertise to the nearby area. the keyword here is “advertising,” which is what the school is exactly doing: marketing its school. obviously, these commercials will tell you that a particular school is prestigious and that you should attend. whether a school is actually “prestigious” is subjective and irrelevant for the purpose of the ad. many schools do it to some degree so it’s nothing to worry about.

PSU is a good state school, better than most. Of course there are some elite state schools, but PSU is decent.

This is CC, home of the 2400-4.0. No one here is worried about getting into PSU.

It’s not the best school, most people I know who go there are really smart and want to save money by going there for engineering or agriculture science or they’re dumb as bricks and want to spend the next 4 years getting trashed.

It is also the most highly recruited university in the nation, according to a WSJ article from last year. Maybe the people who go there just actually want to have jobs when they graduate?!

Like Sarora said, all the people here are basically Ivy wannabes. Basically “prestigious” means top 30 schools. PSU is a decent state school but I don’t think anyone really regards it as prestigious. I’m at Pitt right now so I can get the opinion of a lot of PA people and I don’t really think any of them would describe PSU as prestigious. Of course most of the people I know passed up PSU for Pitt so my point of view is probably skewed.
