I am going to Stony Brook as a business major starting in the Fall of 2008. However, I was wondering if I can switch out before I start attending? Also, I know that Stony Brook is well-known for its science programs but I was wondering about the business department since I haven't heard much about it. Thank you!

I spoke to a staff member (who I believe was part of the business program) and from what I understand in order to be in the business program you have to take certain class. If you take the required class then you automatically receive a business degree.

I believe you can switch out, but you would need to contact the admission office ASAP.

You can switch out of business at any point. Our business department has come a long way in the last couple of years, adding the five-year MBA option and expanding the course offerings. I like our program; I think it's different from other business programs out there, because of the structure and the minor requirement. Business is the third-largest major on campus, by the way.

That said, the easiest thing to do would be to switch at Orientation. Changing it with our office would be pointless now; it's easiest to do once you're actually on campus registering for classes.

I have no idea what sharp7 is talking about.

My son first started as an economics major which I wish he would have stayed in because SB does have a good econ dept. He got into the business school and as sbua has stated, it has come a long way. One of his favorite classes was business law. SB is a damn decent university.
