How is Stonybrook's Business School

My son was accepted to Stony Brook and Albany. He is primarily interested in business school. I wasn't even aware Stony Brook had a business school, I thought it was considered the "science" SUNY. Any opinions how good the business school is? Thanks

I can tell you that if he gets a 3.1+ in business classes, he could apply the honors program for business. I know a lot of people who are business majors here. It would be good if he get in the Honors.

The School of Business just completely overhauled their program last year. There are three big components to the program: the first two are your general business coursework and your concentration (accounting, marketing, finance, or operations). The third is what I think makes our program neat; it requires students to choose an academic minor.

What that does is it forces the student to think outside the traditional business model, and look at the business world from other perspectives. Students can minor in anything on campus: political science, music, biology, dance... anything. So if your son is doing (for example) the accounting concentration with a journalism minor, perhaps he'd want to intern in the accounting office of one of our local media companies. Or if he's doing marketing with a minor in political science, maybe intern with an election campaign. There are dozens of combinations, helping him make the program more unique to his interests.

We're known for the sciences, but business is our third-largest undergrad major right now, so he'll be in a place where he'll make a lot of contacts and a lot of friends. Hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, let us know. Welcome, and congrats!

Thank you both for your replies, it's much appreciated.

Wow, really good to know that you MUST minor in something. I was thinking about doing that anyway, but now that it's policy it makes so much sense because what you learn in business can be applied to basically anything.

To sbuadmissions, I am interested in a career in sports management. I was originally thinking about a journalism minor, because I love to write, but what do you suggest would be a good minor if I wanted to be involved in sports business? (Sorry for high-jacking this thread!) Thanks!

S'okay, it's still applicable. You could do a couple of different things. First, when you choose your business electives (Section B of the major in the undergrad bulletin), pick the sports-related ones. Second, I guess you'd probably want to go with the Marketing concentration, although you could choose any of them. Third, I think journalism's a good way to go, but ultimately, it comes down to doing something you'll enjoy. If you like writing, then go with it. You don't have to decide right away.

My son is in the business program and will graduate this spring. His focus is on accounting and his minor is political science which he loves. He has an amazing constitutional law prof. He has gotten a lot out of his classes and it is just wonderful watching him as he matures into a sophisticated human being. SB had done him well.

For business, is buffalo better than stony brook??

I don't know what "better" means. You'd have to look at the coursework at both places, see if it fits what you're looking to do. I described our business program a few posts up; I'd suggest you look through UB's program also. I like our SoB a lot, because it's broader than most business schools; it forces you to think outside the standard business models. But for example, if you want to work towards the CPA exam, we don't offer an Accounting major. So it really depends on you and your goals -- "better" doesn't matter.

Stony Brook isn't really known for Business. I think Buffalo is the better school for a business major. However, I would go to Stony over Albany if those are your only two choices.

anyone thinking about going?

anyone? this is really hard for me.

jan89x can you tell me which schools you've gotten accepted into..and I'll tell you which I think is the best...

i got into Business for Stony Brook, Penn State, Rutgers, University at Buffalo, Albany. Hotel Management for Boston University, and Syracuse.

Ahh nice choice to pick from =)...One last question...is money a factor? like Boston University is really expensive and Syracuse is pretty expensive..

well i received 30k for syracuse and boston didnt come yet, but i'm going towards one of the SUNY's or Boston

If u wanna do accounting go to buffalo. If you want to do something else with your business major, Albany and Stony business schools are pretty even Id say. If you want to go out of SUNY, hmm.... Penn State.

o srry ......nvm penn state, go boston prolly

thanks!!!!!!
