How is the Comp Sc/Math Dept?

Hi, I am a parent looking to get some information, senior son, applying as international - lived abroad most of his life, born in the US.

School counselor has suggested WM and U of Richmond.

Would love to hear some feedback, Thanks!

Even some general response would be appreciated.

I’m not exactly sure, but the only comp sci major who graduated last year that I knew went to work for Facebook, which from my understanding is the second best job in the industry after working for Google.

W&M is not ranked in the various comp science department rankings. I wonder why - I think it has a good undergraduate comp sci. course. I have worked with many College Park (MD) and W&M comp science graduate. Both top notch. But Mayland is ranked very high. UVA and VTech also have good comp sci departments I hear.

I don’t know much about the compsci department. I don’t think we have PhD programs in either subject, which is why we don’t show up in rankings. I know the department is strong in computational OR and computational probability.

I’m a math major, and pretty happy with the department. There are plentiful opportunities to get involved in research. The department’s specialty is operator theory/matrix analysis, but there are people doing other things. The classes are small; professors generally grade homework themselves and are very available.

The computer science department does have a doctoral program.

Then why don’t people consider WM for CS? Our counselor has recommended us.
