How is the Middle Eastern community represented at Indiana University?

I recently got into IU and hope to get into Kelley, I think I have a good shot as I have a 33 ACT and 4.0+ GPA. I am also pursuing a full ride but I wanted to know how racially diverse the school is. I live in Los Angeles so I am exposed to a very diverse community and I am hearing from a lot of people that Indiana is not that diverse. I just do not want to attend a school where Middle Easterns are looked down upon. I attended a very catholic, white homogenous middle school and the racist jokes never stopped, worst part of my life, so I was just wondering what the atmosphere is like at IU. Thank you!

Kelley parent here. You’ll probably get better feedback from a current student, but I would say that Kelley is somewhere in the middle. Not totally homogenous but not as racially diverse as LA. You can take a look at the pictures on the Kelley ACE Program Facebook page for insight into the racial diversity of the current Kelley freshman honors students. Search Facebook for “Kelley School of Business ACE Program”.

As a current student, I would say that a very large percentage of students are either white, or from a non-Middle Eastern Asian country (mostly China). It’s definitely not homogenous, but there also aren’t that many Middle Eastern students either. I think it’s a fair to say that Indiana as a state is not that diverse, but Indiana University is definitely more diverse than the state in general. It’s hard for me to give you a great perspective because I am white, but most people seem to be very tolerant of others here.

From the IU website:

“The 2016 freshman class:
72.1% in the top quarter of their high school class
56.9% Indiana residents
34.3% students from other U.S. states
8.7% international students
23.3% domestic students of color (African American, Asian American, Latino, American Indian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multiracial)
49.7% female
50.3% male”

As a current student, IU is very open to all cultures and ways of life. Indiana as a state is a different story, but Bloomington is very open. Check out this video on IU’s Culture of Care: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_sKecnzyKk
