How is the prestige of umn, especially math?
I mean,do top grad schools like accepting students from umn math dept?
Are undergraduates who have top rank(like top 5 or top 3) easy to go to schools like MIT,Princeton,Berkeley,Chicago?

The expenses will cost me an arm and a leg.I am wondering is it worth.

well i couldnt tell you a thing about grad shool recruiting, but the umn's prestige is very underestimated. people dont see it as a prestigious school, but many of its programs are just beginning to blossom and it should be a serious competetor in the upcoming years. im not sure about their math dapartment either, but they have good engineering so i would assume the math is pretty decent.

The CBS is very prestigious. For any school with the exception of community colleges, if grades are top notch, you can get into any grad school because it doesn't matter what your undergrad school was as long as you outperformed everyone. My AP English teacher went to UW Madison and then went onto Harvard to get a master's degree.

how about UMN'S first ranked major-chemical engineering??
pretty prestigious?

vvvvaaaapppp,
although UM is as prestigious as UW in math,at least the comprehensive rankings in US NEWS are very different.........
And because I am an international student from China,I knew clearly the differences between a prestigious school and a less one.
Even if you rank top 3 in a university of ranking about 10,you won't be as competitive as a ranking 20 guy in the No.1 university(the math programs are fairly the same).

dingbei,
I think you don't need to be worried.....UW's CE is the best in the nation,so I don't think any grad schools will give less attention to it.

I apply for US universities mainly because of the schools' prestige.
It is very hard for a Chinese schools' undergrad to get into a top grad school.
And you must know,Chinese are probably the most crazy on test scores especially math and sciences......If you know about subjects Olympiad, you will see Chinese teams always rank No.1 .

I know a student with a IMO gold medal. He first enrolled in Peking University(the best in China) and ranked about 15th in math faculty. And then he tranfered to MIT.In the following 3 years he kept within top 5 and now he is a math phd student in Princeton.
If he stayed in Peking University,a 15th ranking even could not promise him a UW-madison.
I know someone who ranked 3th in Fudan University(top 5 in China) got a rej from UW-Madison.And then he went to PSU to earn a master degree. Finally he got in Stanford's phd program.

apayton,I am also very confused.
UM has a lot of great majors. Why it ranks so low.
Maybe UM does not give much attention to undergrads?
