Hi, I’m wondering if anyone here is currently enrolled or was enrolled in the Honors program CSULB? What were some of the pros and cons and would you recommend it? Also, I did not receive an invitation to apply to the program like some other members on here, does that mean my grades/gpa are lower than what CSULB is looking for (CSU gpa: 4.05, ACT: 26, SAT new: 1350, taken/taking 4 APs)?
I’m nearing the end of my freshman year in the honors program. I didn’t have nearly the GPA you did and I also didn’t an invitation to apply. I got in through a weird situation in which my roommate got in and really wanted me as a roommate so she called UHP and they let me apply. I highly suggest you call the UHP office and ask them. The worst they can say is no.
PROS: PRIORITY REGISTRATION (its amazing)
Closest dorm building to campus
Classroom in the building primarily used for a couple of honors class but is great for studying with friends if
you don’t want to be cooped up in your room
Super helpful staff that are always there for you if you’re struggling
(This could be considered a con depending on the person) Challenging classes that don’t fill up as quickly
since they’re only available to UHP
CONS: Mandatory senior thesis (it’s a big deal)
Communal bathrooms
Must attend at least 3 UHP events a semester (this seems easy but it’s just a hassle)
The pros vastly outweigh the cons. UHP is a great little community, the people are nice and you just get more out of your college experience
@whovian13 So I applied and got in! No scholarships but at least I got into the program. If I were to go to CSULB I feel like the pro’s you gave me are enough to convince me to join the program. Do you know if I have to use the UHP dorms or is it optional? And also what do you have to say about your experience as a freshman, if you don’t mind me asking, since I’m currently very very torn about going to LB or Northridge.
Are Honors program participants required to live on campus? My son plans to live at home. Worth applying?
@PadreDeTres You can live at home and commute as a freshman but if you choose to live on campus, then you have to live in the UHP dorm; you can’t live in Parkside, Beachside or any other Hillside building. However freshman can’t buy a parking permit unless you give a very compelling reason (I have a couple people who have a car because they have a job or something similar)
@olivia222 my freshman year was great! I was ready to be out on my own and had very little homesickness (I’m a rare breed) My UHP and major advisors were great and helpful. My classes were fun and challenging. I often went on solo adventures to Downtown LA, Universal Studios, and all around LB (I like adventuring by myself. Don’t worry, I made friends lol) The location and atmosphere is really what made me choose CSULB and it did not disappoint.
PS If you ever want to go to tapings in Hollywood, like for late night talk shows and stuff, use 1iota.com. They give out free tickets. It’s the best thing ever
