How is undergrad business?Compare with Miami of Ohio and OSU.

I think of Case as an “engineering school.” Does the undergrad business program compare favorably with those at Miami of Ohio and Ohio State, which are both well-respected. Are business majors thought well of in the CWRU community, or viewed just as people who couldn’t hack it in Engineering? CWRU’s Business program is much smaller than those other two, correct? How does that affect the student experience?

Remember that Case Western Reserve University was created in 1968 from the Merger of Case Institute of Technology (Engineering) and Western Reserve College (Liberal Arts). So although Case is known for Engineering, it is also strong in Business and Nursing and other Liberal Arts.

My husband was an Accounting major at Weatherhead School of Business. They were not thought of less!
There are many quantitative Finance/Economics majors as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Case has a Single Door Admissions policy so once you are in, you can take courses in any of the schools…you are not prevented from taking a business class because you are not a business major. You also don’t have to “apply” to be in the business school.

At Ohio State for example, there is direct and non-direct admits based on their SAT scores.

Thanks for your reply.

May I ask how long ago? Did he feel that Accounting and other Business grads were well-recruited by quality employers? Is he glad he chose CWRU over his second-choice school?

@BasicOhioParent My son completed most of a major in economics at Case, graduated 2017. He ultimately switched to mathematics, but he really enjoyed the economics classes and professors a lot. There are good economists there, from really all respected schools, like Berkeley, Duke, U of Chicago etc One economist professor helped my son win a SOURCE grant for summer research with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He learned to use specific statistical software tools You can write to the CWRU economics department head to learn more about where they place their economics and accounting majors. The CWRU undergraduate Accounting major is still really well respected. My son’s best friend was in that department and got multiple job offers from big ten accounting firms. I think Case gives business students a lot more than the large schools in terms of quantitative knowhow. For networking, clearly Ohio State is bigger.
What major does your son want to study? Another advantage of CWRU is Think Box, where business majors and engineers start companies together.

If your son wants to be in an entrepreneurial school, look at these videos with him and visit ThinkBox at Case.

I think Arts and Sciences is the largest school at Case Western, then Engineering or they are about the same size. Business is third, in size and College of Nursing is by far the smallest. I think lots of students go to Case specifically to study accounting and get masters of accounting there. In fact, initially, my son was part of a fraternity that was all business majors at Case Western too. So there are a lot of business majors, and they are going there specifically for the programs in accounting, entrepreneurship and marketing. There is a lot of students studying psychology, English, and the sciences, so I don’t think of Case as an engineering school so much, myself. My son was in Arts and Sciences. (math/physics major, economics minor). Remember, Case Western is now more well known for Medicine than engineering I would say so premeds are gong there in droves. With that engineering, especially polymer science is strong as is mechanical/aerospace.

Here is the website for the Case Weatherhead School of Management with all the undergraduate majors, listed.
Note that economics is in the business college and not in Arts and Sciences College. Accounting in particular has a good job outcome is my understanding.

Here are the various clubs and professional business groups at Case:

Delta Sigma Phi was the business oriented social fraternity at CWRU about four years ago
but not sure they are exclusively business majors.

Case is a preprofessional type of place, so premed, prelaw, business, nursing, engineering are all strong but
arts and sciences with a PhD as the end goal, is also strong.

^Just to clarify, the Arts & Sciences school offers a BA in econ, although the courses are taught by the econ dept in the business school. http://bulletin.case.edu/collegeofartsandsciences/economics/

There is also a new Economics Honors program at CWRU for undergrads:

@BasicOhioParent He was hired by a Big4 (then Big 8) Accounting firm. They still recruit there now.
This was 30 years ago. Case had the best financial aid (and his Dad went there too!) so he picked Case.

Thanks all for the replies.
