I know that CMU offers to meet full financial need for early decision students, but how much of that financial aid is loans? Could everyone post how much of their FA package is a loan?

In September, on the CMU FA website you will find a FA estimate form. Send that in and within two weeks you will get estimated FA numbers for ED and RD. Make sure you put in accurate financial numbers. Junk in - junk out.

Yes, I’ll do that but I’d like to have some idea before Sept… Anyone know?

I was an ED applicant and my financial aid package included grant money and about nine thousand in loans.

Thanks x101steph8… would you mind sharing what % of your financial aid package were loans and what % were grants/scholarships? I had a friend who got a $40k financial aid package from NYU that contained $30k in loans! Some universities put a cap on loans, or offer no-loan financial aid. I’m just trying to understand CMU’s approach to loans in FA packages.

Sure! I received a package of roughly $37,000, give or take some. Most of that was grants for me. I had about $28,000 in grants and then $9,000 in loans. Once again, I was an ED applicant, which also seems to make a difference!

OK thanks. Was your FAFSA EFC around $20,000 then?

Yeah, about that I think! My parents handled all of that!

So is $9000 in loans typical? Anyone else willing to share their financial aid numbers?

I had a rough 20k EFc, and got 30k in grants, and just federal loans. A total of 38k in aid altogether…

BlizzBlazer - were you ED or RD?

I was RD. Then again, I am African American, and apparently that makes a difference. Though I don’t know for sure since none of my friends applied for financial aid lol…
