@aniruddhc Someone got into UMich with a 44%? Can you elaborate on it? Was the guy some well rounded applicant with stellar ECs and stuff? Did he apply for any financial aid?

Is your sister from IIT? Getting into Cornell Masters is pretty tough, hence I’m asking.

@harish You talked about someone named Anshuman who got into MIT with really low SAT scores. Do you know more about that guy, like his school marks, ECs etc?

And did that Kolkata Yale '13 from La Marts have very many EC awards? How did he do in ICSE? And what about that Yale guy from Jamshedpur? He really scored 60% in school?

@Blackadder
Well an 81 will be looked at like an 81, which looks not-as-good as an 85 or 90, but still not jumping out of the page like a 70-something. Don’t let it stop you from applying.

Rank is important, true, but it is important in a way that it makes your 90s look better, it wont make your 70s look good.

-Anomaly- If you have 6 subjects then the highest percentage can be 81.33 (or if you have 3 subjects, which I doubt) but then your percentage can’t be 81.10, it can only be 81.16 or 81, what’s going on here? Do they give out marks like 486.5/600, that’s weird.

@Perfectpixie
I don’t know how to salvage the situation for you, but I can give you some advice - apply confidently, don’t give any long-winded explanations or ask the counselor to write letters ‘establishing the context’ or anything. It might be better to not look like you’re making excuses.

The only college where I know people have gotten in with not-so-great scores is MIT (still rare though), given that they are very talented at technical stuff and have something to show for it.

@RohanG - Anshuman Panda (MIT’12) got some 1800s SAT score, but he was amongst the West Bengal Board Toppers in 10 & 12, he was a great Researcher, valedictorian of his school and SAT-Subject 2400. He had non-existent ECs and no participation in sports related activities, but he had a compelling story because he was from the most remote & rural area of West Bengal where his family’s monthly income was Rs. 3000 (~$60) only. His education cost was were managed only by the donations from charities and scholarships from national reputed organisations. He was from Bankura (school - Bankura Zilla).

The LMB—> Yale guy was the topper most of his school life. A great quizzer and a passionate VIOLINist, he was recommended by his Principal “greatest student LMB has ever seen”…

The Jamshedpur guy who got Yale - I just know that he was the student president, guitarist and got near-to-perfect SAT.

@Rohan: Yeah, I really don’t know how he got in, actually. He did well in the 10th (91%), SAT 2080, but I think it was because he plays football at the international level!

Lol my sister isn’t from IIT. She’s from DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering. Google it. Third best engineering college in Mumbai.

@Blackadder: LOL. WHY are you complaining? Just apply. I’d be damned if you don’t get into a top 20! LMAO.

@Pix: A 79 is really good. Most colleges understand the whole 11th 12th thing, etc. Don’t you know that Gary7 got into UPenn WITH 50% aid, even though he got a 79% as well?

harisheena-This Anshuman guy,how did going to MIT strike him then?Pretty rare occurance for a guy living in rural bengal!What did he write his essay on?His life and decisions?

I read a post of this India—>MIT guy, who wrote - “No matter even if some of the parts of application stinks. If you have the drive to achieve your goals and desires, no one can stop you and finally you shall SUCCEED”…

@pix - you got 79; believe me!! if you are an ivy league (or other top ivy-league caliber schools) caliber student, you will get in even if you had scored 69…

@everyone - Oh one more thing - this (69 stuff) can be controversial and I know most of you are now going to ask questions about it, but this is just an example. Don’t challenge now by REALLY getting 69… Understand wat i m trying to say…

Still doesn’t help. SAT scores are something that help you only a little if they’re good, but screw you over if you’re bad.
So a 2400 isn’t a guaranteed admit, but something like a 1700 can be close to a guaranteed rejection.

guitarclassical: My school does give weird marks like 486.5/600. And it also takes into account Physical Education, which itself lowered my percentage by 3.

aniruddh: Hell you can never be sure. My stats are like, toward the middle-lower end of Top 20 applicants anyway.

Oh that is the reason for which the Yale officer told me that it’s better to be a small fish in a big pond rather than being a big fish in a small pond. it’s better to study in ivy-league feeder schools like DPS-RK Puram, Dhirubai Ambani Intl School, Calcutta International School, La Marts and be a small fish.
