How liberal/secular are the ut austin students and faculty????

I'm aware of the fact the Austin is a very progressive/liberal city, but I also know that UT has more than 90% in state students, and considering how conservative texas is, I was wondering if the school is as liberal as the town that its in. I'm a very liberal, agnostic, non preppy, northern kid from chicago area. Will I feel out of place? Does it have a huge souther vibe? Are the students preppy? Very religious?

You won’t feel out of place. It is large and diverse.

Forum issues, sorry.

Okay, there is a vigorous young Republicans group and they do put on some provocative programs, like the affirmative action bake sale. You may see more Christian religious groups than you would at say, U of Wisconsin. (Or maybe not; I have never been to U of W.) There is a strong Greek faction. However, it is a diverse college campus, and the overall vibe is pretty liberal. Wyatt Cenac from the Daily Show came to UT. George Takei is coming at the end of the month, and President Obama is coming to the LBJ Library for the fiftieth anniversary of the civil rights legislation his admin passed. When the Young Republicans wanted to stage a Catch the Illegal Alien contest, outrage on campus caused them to cancel (it wasn’t banned, it got canceled when the campus rose up against the idea). There is a strong Hillel and Chabad presence.

Walking around, I see lots of nonwhite faces. Certainly there are many Hispanic students.

UT students are self selected and are not representative of the state population of students. UT is known as the liberal good public university in the state and most of the more liberal good students prefer it, while the more conservative good students usually prefer other schools, often Texas A&M. It is unlikely that any US liberal students, no matter how liberal, would feel out of place at UT.
