i have heard estimates ranging from 500 words or less to 1000-1500 words for the long essay.. Can anyone let me know which it is? Mine is currently 617 words.

Make it however long it takes you to convey your point, and then trim out the fluff.

My S's long essay was ~1,100 words. I don't think length matters as much as your ideas and how you express them. Sometimes the shorter the better.

Mine was the mustard option, and according to Word it is 511 words. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Mine was 671.

dd's was 800 something--one typed page exactly with question header.

I did the Martin Luther King option and it was 902 words. My other essays were long-ish too. My favorite things essay was 448 words and my why chicago essay was, wow I just realized this and totally didn't plan it, 448 words. I would say any longer than a page and a half for the long essay is too long.

Have some people read it and ask them if it feels long and tedious. If not, you're good. If so, consider cutting. That's what I did. Just make sure you consistently keep people's attention

That's freaky, 123. My essay was exactly 671 words, too. Eerie....

mine was about 1000 words. its not about length, its about writing a full response to whichever prompt you chose.

Mine was 571 words, option #5.

619 words for mustard, 396 for why chicago, 313 for fave art/books/music

oh, around 485 words. No title. mustard

My "Why UChicago?" essay was 719 words, my favorites essay was 364, and my mustard essay was 450.

i know i wrote this before, but it mustve gotten buried in the archives: my admissions officer interviewer said 250-500 for each of the smaller ones and 1000-1500 for the long one. mine were ~200, ~400, and ~900 each, and i was admitted.

bohemian rhapsody- i like how your "long" essay is shorter than your "short" essay =) i'm applying regular but my essays are 500,500,1400 so thanks qwert because i was kind of worried.

~520 words for the long one, less for the others.
