mine is almost 1500 words, is that too long or does Chicago not care?

I think that's too long.

Chicago leaves it up to you so you have to use your best judgement.

How long are you guys' essays?

mine was about 1000 words.

So, a solid 800-900 word essay would be of good length?

Mine was about 600-700 words...

I believe that brevity is best when it comes to admissions essays.

My two shorter essays were around 250-350 words.

Yea. Mine's to the point, nicely written, clean cut. I remember another Admissions person told me that "anything past the one and a half page mark is probably not interesting enough for me to read in the first place"....

Mine's only 424 words...I'm getting really nervous...

Don't be nervous. Mine is only 430 words, and it conveys more of my personality than any essay I've ever written. The shorter, the better. With thousands of apps, would you want to read 1000-word essays, or 400?

P.S. How is 1000 words a page or two? I assume Chicago means an MLA page, which is double-spaced--which is, in turn, much less than 1000 words. :)

I dunno...after all, the University of Chicago DOES publish the Chicago Manual of Style...

But yes, that is basically the same as MLA Format in terms of how it will appear on the page.

Well, it's too late seeing as how I already submitted but I did it online and on the preview, my 1063 word essay shows up as well under a page and a half (including the question) so I think I'm good.

My main essay (I did the mustard one, unfortunately) was 450 words. My "favorite things" essay was 364, and my "why chicago?" essay was a whopping 719 (I justified this length to myself by rationalizing that it was only three paragraphs. Three huge paragraphs).

Haha, thats the concern i have with my essay of a whopping 1755 words. I had other people read it and few actually thought it was dull though, that it kept their attention all the way to the end, however I think I might cut it down a tad, to be merciful.

I think that's far too long. Are you really such a gifted writer or have such a unique concept that warrants it?

Wondelst:

Unless you are the next great american writer, it is hard to keep UChicago's attention--at that high calliber that they seem to crave for:)--when you use a "monstrous" 1755 words.

well its not really in essay format, its a movie script. i definitely will cut it down but i dont know. its rather entertaining and it breaks my heart, cutting it down! i think i shall get more people to read it and get more feedback.

Mine's about 670. It said write a page or two. So I wrote about 1 page single spaced.
