How long did it take you to find a solid, salary job after graduation?

Hi, I would like to know as engineering majors, how long after graduation (or if you received an offer before graduating) did it take for you to find a job that was secure, and paid well (salary, or great hourly wage)?
Also could you please list your major/engineering discipline and if you had engineering internship/job experience during your undergrad?

6 months before I graduated. Mechanical engineering, 2009, 3 summer internships.

Not me but my son: 1 month after graduating in 2010 with co-op experience in Computer Engineering.

One month, as a CS/math double major, but this was way back in 1986. Note that this was after graduating from uni in Australia, with no previous experience, and no “GPA” as a different grading system is used in Australia. Sent resumes via snail mail to a couple dozen U.S. employers. Received an immediate phone interview from a startup employer right after graduation while still in Australia, followed by an in-person interview (series of interviews testing my technical knowledge) two weeks later in the U.S., followed by a very competitive offer of employment (high salary, stock options, full benefits). CS was a hot major at that time, as it is once again right now.

I am currently interning for a major O&G company in a midstream role. I believe I will receive a full time offer in a few weeks (I graduate spring 2014). Unfortunately I want to work upstream and they said they could not offer me upstream unless I restarted my search at the career fair in the fall.

I think most people I know who graduate in the spring receive their full time offers in the fall and all are solid positions.

My son got his job offer in October of his senior year. He graduated in 2011 with a degree in mechanical engineering and he also had 3 internships. His GPA also helped.

I started to apply after my aftergrad trip (2 months after my grad ceremony). Got 2 offers within a month. Guess I got lucky since most people are working already so supply of newgrads are low ( got into o&g industry). The job already paid very well but I moved to another company within a year for better pay/security and vacation days.

I am a EE and have internship experience in the energy industry. I also did undergrad research and got a publication and have written a few apps/games.

I rarely hear of anyone not having a job offer/grad school acceptance before graduating. In the 2 instances I can think of they both had non-work plans after they graduated.

Negative 6 months. CS. 2 summer internships.

In 1984, my college had an excellent placement office. Most of my engineering classmates had job offers before graduation. In my case it was a a company where I had co-op’d for two prior summers.

To me the current economy seem harder for new engineering grads. It still pays to leverage the college placement center, but it s also good to have co-op/intern experience and “networking” too.
